Cześć, if anyone would cast an eye over this and offer any revision, i'd be most grateful: Pani byłby najwięcej cudowny rzecz ja zjeść zawsze widziany I know it is no good as it is, it is a word by word dictionary translation. It's supposed to read You were the most wonderful thing i've ever seen yes it's for a letter, no it's not a lie, słowo honoru. Dziękuję

First of all -do we need official version or not? I mean -is the person your friend, colleague or maybe your doctor or school professor? ;)
Let's assume it's th first option.

"Jesteś najpiękniejszą osobą, jaką w życiu widziałem"
I had to change it to: "you are the most beautiful person I've ever seen" -as in Polish thing means what it is -thing ;)
I laso change "you were" to "you are" -as "you were doesn't make much sense"

That would translate as:

"Lady (or Mrs) would be the most wonderful thing I eat always seen".

I'm not sure if past tense is most suitable here (it would suggest that she
is no longer "the most wonderful"). But if that's what you meant then...

Byłaś najwspanialszą rzeczą jaką kiedykolwiek widziałem.

...would be a basic translation.

However, I'm not quite sure if referring to a woman as a "thing" (rzeczą)
would be considered an appropriate choice of words. If we don't want to
be rude then maybe...

Byłaś najwspanialszym zjawiskiem jakie kiedykolwiek widziałem.

...would be more appropriate?

Oh, and we have to get rid of this strange past tense (and maybe replace
"zjawisko" with something more romantic and add one more adjective
to put some emphasis on how wonderful she is)...

Jesteś najwspanialszą, najcudowniejszą istotą jaką kiedykolwiek widziałem.

Yes, I'm quite happy with that last sentence - you should try it (and don't forget
to invite me to your wedding ;)).

To ooshak: yes, a friend I wish was more. I didn't write beautiful as it doesn't do justice to what i meant. Thing, i used because i meant better than anything else, person, place, anything at all. I know thing could sound wrong but... And the past tense is okay here, because it is past when i saw her so.

Torq: I'm glad it amused you ;) any Polish i have is from films... I will write what i meant in English also, so if the translation was terrible (and it was!) she would know what i'd intended. What if i wrote the most wonderful sight? You are the most wonderful sight i've ever seen?

I have my doubts about tenses and the whole "wonderful thing I've ever seen" thing, since a person can't be a "thing" as far as I'm concerned.
I'd translate it as:
Jesteś najwspanialszą kobieta jaką kiedykolwiek spotkałem.
Are we to translate the part with the letter as well? Because I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean.

Thank you mira, yes the tenses may seem awry, and by thing, well all things are things (!). I changed it to
- You are the most wonderful sight i've ever known -
it ended up as it did because i was trying to translate it to Polish and back, etcetera.

i just typed to say i was sincere, so people would not think i was only trying to impress someone, no it wasn't to be part of the letter.

Not what i meant, because i was saying not that she was the most wonderful woman, but more wonderful than all else i've known, it is difficult to express this without using anything, which here means all, not referring to a person as an object. What i am saying is for saying farewell, i suppose, so she knows she was wonderful to know.

oh, it changes things quite a biy -that's why you used the past tense!
In this case you can say "byłaś najpiękniejszą istotą, jaką w życiu spotkałem"
but it'll mean that things have changed now and someone else can be -or is -that most beautiful thing... and I don't think you want to do that.
If the scores still stand, leave it as it is...

People say a lot of things that don't come straight from the heart, and that lowers the value of such expressions.

Oh, yes - but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't say nice thing to people
out of fear that that might not sound very honest. Especially with women
you can hardly go wrong with a compliment (even if it's not a very honest one).

And at least the young generation is aware of this. But we can drop that discussion.

I wouldn't know about young generation. I'm already 30 - it's been ages since
I was young, so I guess you're right - we can drop that discussion ;)

SzwedwPolsce - I was writing it, not saying, so... but it is an absolute truth, and if i was able to lie, and not be an over emotional Irish fool as i am, i would never have upset her. But she has returned to Poland, and before i could give her the letter. Thanks all.
