A word that has puzzled for ages..

'Lans'

Can anyone tell me what this means??

As far as I can tell it means something like 'showing off'. Often used as a verb 'lansować się' (be seen in the right places doing trendy things).

I'm not sure of the etymology (though it might be from ... lance(?)

Yes, but typically it relates to showing off one's material status, less often skills. So wearing expensive cloths, driving luxury cars etc.
Lansować się or coś/kogoś can also mean "(to try) to promote oneself or sth/sb, usually in show business", ex. "Radio co roku lansuje wakacyjne hity" - "Radio promotes summer hits every year"

BTW always try miejski.pl for informal words (Polish substitute of urbandictionary.com).

So it holds quite a superficial, materialistic meaning.. I thought it might be more positive than that!

It holds a materialistic meaning, but keep in mind that szpan/szpanować is more negative! Lans is more neutral, can be sometimes positive even.

Unless you really hate the whole idea..... IME szpanować also has connotations of hoi polloi while lansować is more for the beautiful people.

Lans is also used among friends. For instance, I notice that one of my friends has a new watch and I like it, so I can say to him "niezły lansik" and he would know it's a compliment.

Another humorous use of a foreign word is "burżuj" from French "bourgeois". When I bough my electric bass and a new amp, my music friends looked at me with jealousy and were saying: "Ale z ciebie burżuj!" ;-)) Acting as I have done creates "hejt" (hate) around you, another newly borrowed word: "Zasługujesz na hejt!" or "Należy ciebie hejtować!" :-)))

You cannot have a plural of LAN, there is only one Local Area Network. The Inter Net is irrelevant in this context.

Mafektis, Koala, and (naturally) myself have the right definitions. It isn't a straightforward word, but it does mean showing off and self-promotion.
