thankyou for your kind translations. it is slowly helping me to build a picture and find out more about my family.

i have today found some more photos with writing on the back whilst looking through some of my grandfathers old things. on some of theem i can pick out names but after that i am stuck as to what is going on in the photos. there are also many people whom i do not recognise and put names to.

i wil post them here in the hope that somebody may be kind enough to help me again but if anything people may find them interesting as a lot of them are from days gone by in Poland.

1. for beloved uncle, whom i've never saw, as a keepsake. Iwona

( i can't see very clearly what is written on a 3rd and 4th photo)

4. I'm sending this picture for my Mommy and Siblings, for nice memories (to retain nice memories?) from Koenigsberg. Zosia

7.You surely remember the old lady (grandma) who's crocheting so much for Jeanine and her Godmother. This picture was taken in the country where Jeanine was with her in-laws and Godmother and we came for a couple of days. Grandma and her friend came to visit us.

I believe this is the way to write umlauts when you don't have the right font at hand.

You're correct. I have umlauts in my last name and sometimes the ö becomes oe when I get correspondence from Sweden. Most of the time they simply write o and leave out the dots.

Either way, great thread, like the helpfulness here... I'm glad no one directed him to google translator or something similar as I've seen it here in the past.

There are 3 "Scandinavian" letters.

Å -> aa
Ä (Æ) -> ae
Ö (Ø) -> oe

(Danish/Norwegian), although Norwegians can use the Swedish spelling too.

So, when translated into English

Åre - becomes Aare
Älmhult - becomes Aelmhult
Öland - becomes Oeland

True although I've seen some "try google" comments even when people were trying to learn how to say thanks, etc.

I have two family photographs sent to me from my cousin. We cannot translate the Polish into English and none of our relatives who could are still alive. Could anyone help us please?
