What would be the best way to translate the following quote into Polish?

"Strive not to be a success but rather to be of value"

My own varation on this would be:
Nie staraj się zostać człowiekiem sukcesu, lecz po prostu człowiekiem!

BTW in PRL rents would say: 'Chcę, żeby wyrósł na porządnego człowieka!' Now quite often it is: '...żeby odniósł sukces'.

Is that just so much conformist claptrap or does it truly reflect the different epoches?

Isn't the old expression "wyjśc na ludzi", lroughly 'make something of themselves' ?


For the record this (fairly fluent) non-native speaker like's Bzibioh's version the best as being more idiomatic.

My idea would something like 'nie goń za sukcesem tylko wartością' (literally: don't pursue sucess, (pursue) instead value)

Many thanks, I often have problems when it comes to anaphoric agreement.... I should remember that prepositions (though not always verbs) have to be repeated....
