I know it means wire plucker -- a dismissive term for a rock musician, but is there a good English equivalent?

There is another rather vulgar meaning.

maybe the English never had a specific derogatory word for a rock/rythm and blues musician - in America the progress of rock music has been gradual - in Poland it was a revolution and lots of people perceived 'big beat' as noise rather than music (which is not that unreasonable) - specific musical styles have bad influence on plant growth (this has been scientiffically tested) and rock is among them (in contrast to classical music which encourages plant growth (i.e. is positively affecting not merely neutral) - specific traits of music make it beneficial or detrimental to plant growth - rythm or musical accents among them (rock like blues and jazz have syncopated rythms or employ out-of-ordinary rythms)
