Hi!

I seem to have pasted over the part where I wrote that I'd be so grateful if someone could translate this for me, because google translate doesn't seem to make sense!

So thank you for translating it for me anyway :)

I joined a music website while I was in Poland recently (I'm back in the UK now) and even though my status says I'm from the UK, the 'friends with the same taste in music' I've accepted keep thinking I'm Polish and writing to me in Polish.

So...I thought it might help me to learn Polish if I tried to answer them. To this person, I wrote 'Bardzo mi mi³o:) ' - thinking it simply means 'nice to meet you'....was I wrong??!!

He wrote that probably because you wrote "bardzo"(very).Maybe he wonted to be funny?We usually just say "mi³o mi" but he shouldn't answer that way in my opinion(if he was serious).

I'm finding that this is totally the hardest language I've ever learned! With French, for example, I can just look the words up in the dictionary and work out what it says by rearranging the words....but a lot of Polish words I'm seeing in messages, aren't in the dictionary!

If someone could write what each of these word literally means...it would help me a lot in working out how Polish sentences are formed.

bardzo mi mi³o means I'm very pleased and if you didn't add poznaæ
 the person was surprised and asked what's the reason that you're so pleased.

Oh no! Haha! I got the phrase from a phrase book. It says it means 'very pleased to meet you' and doesn't mention 'poznaæ' ! Damn phrase book!
But I'm wondering, does the phrase book not include it because maybe 'poznaæ' is formal and not always necessary?? (and therefore he was just being funny), or is it vital to use 'poznaæ' or the greeting really never makes sense ?? (I'm suspecting the book's wrong here!)

You always need to give a reason why you're pleased. It's like in English language.
With the phrase book you probably overlooked something.

Similar words:

poznaæ - to meet/ as in Nice to meet you
widzieæ - to see/ Nice to see you
spotkac - to see or to meet/ Nice to see you or Nice to meet you again.

The book is OK. When you say "bardzo mi mi³o" upon meeting someone, the reason for it is obvious, so you don't need to add "poznaæ", although you may if you want to. "Bardzo mi mi³o" with no further specification is more universal and you can use it in all kinds of situations.

And no, you don't need to state the reason if it is obvious in the context/situation. like when somebody says "I like you" then simply saying "bardzo mi mi³o" is OK, same as in the introduction situation.

It's different when you meet face to face and are able to have a short conversation. Same in English, you don't write to unknown people "I'm very pleased"?? Some people could wonder , if you are okay.

Of course, this wasn't an introduction situation, somebody wrote something and Turtleonfire responded "bardzo mi mi³o", which might have been (and probably was) completely off the line. What I was saying about obvious contexts clearly doesn't apply here.
