Friend, mate, workmate, pal, true love, passing acquaintance...

How many words are there in Polish for all the different kinds of friend there could possibly be?

I'm not looking for a number in answer to this question. I want words!
So don't just say "The answer is 27."

kochanek - lover
przyjaciel - friend
kumpel - mate (I think)

współlokator - flatmate/roommate

koleżanka - girl friend

przyjaciółka - female friend

dziewczyna - girlfriend

chlopak - boyfriend

Which ones are the ones a girl (a straight one) would call a girlfriend, which is what a bloke would call a girl who is a friend, and which one is a girlfriend as in girlfriend-and-boyfriend?


One of my workmates gets referred to sometimes as Leniwiec (sloth, two-toed or three-toed variety).

as in girlfriend-and-boyfriend

drużba - best man
kompan – companion
stary/a – a pal or mate
znajomy – acquaintance but (“mój dobry/stary znajomy” almost like a good friend of mine)

nigdy nie sprawdzalem pod moimi nogami

also:
stary - old man (about a father)
stara - old lady (about a mother)
not a nice way though...

staruszek - old man (as an old man)
staruszka - old lady (as an old lady)

Can you use these to a married woman in the presence of her husband?

i'd use koleżanka...with przyjaciółka he may get crazy ideas...

or it means a partner (like a partner in an unmarried couple, or sexual partner).
life partner - partner życiowy/ partnerka życiowa

When does a dziewczyna stop being a dziewczyna?
One answer could be: when the relationship falls apart.

I was trying to explain to a współpracownik about who I had been working with on another site recently. Other than the boss who he already knew about, a man in his late thirties, I also mentioned a 90 year old girl.

I know how nineteen and ninety are two easily misheard English words, but how do I manage to get my -naście and my -dziesiąt mixed up quite so easily?

It's when she becomes your ex/była. Or żona. Or you hire some henchmen to ehem, do the 'mokra robota'.

Does Polish distinguish between and have good equiavelents for the following:
-- girlfriend
-- fiancée
-- partner
-- live-in lover
--common-law wife
Does one become a fiancée after a zaręczyny -- engagement party attended by both sides' parents, siblings, godparents and close friends or is this just a turn of phrase? Do those living out of wedlock have to have children to be regarded as common-law spouses?
