Need help with the origins of the surname von Czapiewski

I'm trying to find out where my surname comes from
my surname is von Czapiewski

I was always told by my grand parents that this surname
could be linked to polish nobility

I know the origins of my surname comes from the village called
Czapiewice

Could any one please assist me in my family research.

No Szapiewski or von Szapiewski in today's Poland, as far as I can tell. Could it have been Szaplewski, believed to have derived from the German name Scheppel?

Could it have been Czapiewski or Czaplewski? Both seem to be Pommeranian surnames (hence the 'von' prefix from being in Prussia previously)

My name is Laurice von Czapiewski. My grandfather moved from Poland to Namibia. I now live in Qatar. I heard that we used to be Szapiewki or the like. I think you are referring to my family. My father was Lorentius Zuroh von Czapiewski. He passed away in 2005.

We are 5 children. 2 of my sisters and my mother now live in South Africa.

CZAPIEWSKI: toponymic nick from Czapiewo; someone probably added the von to pose as a Prussian aristocrat.

PYNER: probably from pyna (brass trouser button); pyner could have been Yiddish for someone who made such buttons.

But to start off with - my great grandfather came from poland, married Tina Visser, and they had 11 children. My grandmother, Johanna von Czapiewski, was the second eldest.

She married Gouws Brand and she had two children.
My dad is the eldest of the two - Nico Brand.
But hey, I've got all kinds of bits and pieces that I can't make sense of plus more info on the family in South Africa, so give me a shout:)

Hallo my grandfather was Lorenthius Zorich von Czapiewski. My father is Raymond von Czapiewski. We live in the Nortern Cape Province - Kathu. Koekie and Laurice I think we are related my father said his grandmothers name was Tina.

Hi my Dad's family originally come from Czapiewice and are called von Zuraw. The family got their title after helping the King defeat the Ottoman Empire. We have a family crest. Most of my family still live in Northern Poland. My grandfather Pawel (son of Franciszek who died 2.12.1931) built a house next to an old mill he bought in Wieprznica. The mill is still standing. My Dad moved to England at the end of the war. Anyone out there related? I know my grandfather's brother emigrated to the USA before the war. Teresa

Hello Czapiewskis! I am a direct descendent of Joseph Czapiewski who emigrated to the USA in the early 1900s. He eventually settled in Detroit, Michigan and I still live in the Detroit area. I have always heard the Czapiewski family name may have had a "Von" placed in front of it. Interesting to learn the honorific "Von" was added in gratitude for repelling the Turks. I would be interested if anyone has more Czapiewski family history!

Von = from
In German, it became mandatory for any noblemen to use in his documents. In Polish it would been just Czapiewski cause ending «ski» kinda used to say one is from there. So basically your saying that «von Czapiewski» equals «from Czapiew from»

Any Polish noblemen would be... Wary of using «von» in his surname as it would indicate submissiveness to German rules/regulations or outright disloyalty.

One difference is to have used it cause of living under partitions (enforced rule) but there truely is no reason to keep the von any longer. Unless one has attached himself to the surname to be like that of course.

I am a Chapeski, though we came over in the 1800s and settled in two main locations -- Kazabazua in Quebec and in Wilno, Ontario. Our names are very much still in the area and we were forced to anglicize the name. We came from Czapice -- as did my mom's family, Sholea (Szola -- again, forced to anglicize and it isn't even translated/phonetically correct)... Anyways - I had a chance to visit the village (or so I thought) but couldn't find any Chapeski's or Sholea's so... it turned out, I went all the way to poland to visit the wrong place. Hah! Turns out there is an awesome woman who is going to take me next time. She is in Gdansk and her grandfather is originally from the village as well. I am about to take the leap and ask her, what happened to the Czapieski/ska's who remained during WWII? What happened to our family?

Anyways, I would love to hear from all of you out there -- maybe one day, we can have a family reunion in Poland, in Czapice, if anyone is game!!! My boyfriend is Czech and understands the language quite a bit (though they claim to not understand him, haha!) and perhaps a historical tour of the area would be quite appropriate!

Ran across your post while researching my surname's spelling.
I was looking to find information and build a genealogy, possibly find out if we had a coat of arms/heraldry.
Was your last name anglicized to "Chapp" by any chance?
My grandfather's name is Bernard and he married Frances Pazdan. I THINK Bernard's father's name was Joseph??? I have to check...
But they too lived in Detroit, MI.
Most of the Chapp family still lives in Michigan, either in Wyandotte, or scattered around Boyne and Traverse area.
We have a big family. So is it possible we're related?

I haven't been on this treat for years, forgot about it till today, Hendrik von Czapiewski was my grandfather, Deon von Czapiewski his son, is my dad. Hendrik had 2 Daughters and 4 sons, Teresa, Eveline, Deon, Hendrik, Ivan and Vincent
