KUKULA ancestry

hi. im trying to track my lineage to learn about my mom's family. i know her father's name was piotr kukula and he was born in 1922 in poland. his parents were jan and bregida. im told he had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. if anyone might be of relation or even might have known my grandfather (i know its highly unlikely but i can dream hah) i'd love any help i can get - victoria

I have done some research into my KUKULA ancestry and there are quite a few of them there. To find yours more easily you should find out where they lived.

1 of my students is a Kukuła.

KUKU£A: the cuckoo (bird); in modern Polish kukułka is the common name for the bird species but Kukuła is more common as a surname.

My grandmother's name was Anna Kukula (1900-1974). She lived in Katowice Poland, which is very close to Chorzów Poland. This is in southern Poland which is close to the Austrian Border. Her married name was Brankovsky, and they lived in Austria, close to the Polish border in a town called Laa an der Thaya. I cannot trace her family tree. I have seen some other spellings of Kukula (Kuchula, Kukul, Kukulia). I don't have info on siblings either. Can anyone help?

Have you searched for Kattowitz, Prussia (or German Empire) already? That's the first thing you should do given the time frame.

KUKUŁA: cuckoo (in normal usage in diminutive form kukułka); typical peasant name dervied from the names of livestock, wildlife, tools, etc.
Hence Wrona, Kogut, Koza, Skowron, Byk, Lis, Łopata, Sito, etc.

Interestingly enough "kukkula" (with two 'k's') in Finnish means "flower", I believe.

The double 'k' for sure. The Polish spelling with a single 'k' may well be native Slavic, perhaps even of Hungarian origin (there again, the Uralic connection):-)

I have many Kulka in my family tree and one Kukielka. Southern Poland-Western Ukraine.

Although at first glance these names may appear similar, they come from totally different roots:

KUKIEŁKA: diminutive of kukła (puppet).

KULKA: diminutive of kula (bullet, cannonball or any spherical object), hence "little ball". A coat of arms accompanies the Kulka surname.

Have found more information since my original post and just reaching out in case anyone may have common names within their family trees that I have since discovered. My Grandfather, Piotr Kukula (1922-1981) was born in Lencze, a small village outside of Krakow, Poland. He had siblings whose names were Yosej and Slanislav, as well as a sister, but I do not know her name. His parents were Jan Kukula (b.1875) and Brigyda Bielas (b.1888) (both also from Lencze). Jan's parents were Jan Kukula and Salomea Sawicka., and Brigyda's mother's name was Marianna but unsure of father's name.

I know of Polish company in Greenpoint, Bklyn., "MIKULA PLUMBING"
Again, the only Kukula's I know of are Finns:-)

Poland doesn't border Austria. Katowice is very close to Chorzów but both are far that place in Austria.

Kukula sounds Polish enough to me.
A quick google search shows that there are still Kukulas in Lencze. You may try contacting the parish there. There was a mass for the late Józef and Paulina Kukula on May 3.

It's hard to say if it was your grandad's brother as the village is not that small (about 1500 people accordingto wiki ) but there's a chance.

As for the names, the correct spellings would be : Brygida, Stanisław, Józef. The rest are spelled ok.

Any further evidence in your research to indicate some connection whatsoever, however remote, between "Kukula" and the Finnish "Kukkula"?
I realize that certain double consonants in Polish, such as "kk", for instance "Mikke-Korwin" do exist. It's simply that again, I knew somebody named

"KukKula" who was from Finland, and the name just stuck with me:-)

Kukula is derived from kukulka - cuckoo.

Quite similar then to the original German "Kuckuck", as in "Kuckucksuhr" or "cuckoo clock or the bird.
Interesting if in fact there is zero relation to "Kukkula":-) Most intriguing.

It's kukulka, cuckoo, Kuckuck , coucou, kukushka (plus lots of other koo koos in different languages) because of the sound the bird makes. I doubt the 'original' is German.

No. KUKU LELE is ancient female cry on funerals or when woman weep. In later time it was then generally accepted, by males also,... KUUKUU LEELEE.... when people complaint and in similar weak state. But, its mostly connected to woman. I myself, to put cross on myself, fortunately, can`t even remember did I ever used KUUKUU LEELEE.

My last name is Kukola but originally supposed to be spelt Kukula (no slash on l) and I'm seriously confused as to where this last name comes from. My parents are both mostly Romanian but my dad is mixed Hungarian (kukula comes from him) and my mom is mixed with Serbian. Where the hell is this last name from?

My guess is that it's a Hungarian version of a Polish or Slovak name or maybe a Hungarian spelling of Romanian cucul "the cuckoo"
