People skin's colour is what it is because God or some other force made it that way. Can't we just leave it at that? It's not like we choose it.

Skin colour adapts to one's environment. Less sun makes for pale skin, and more sun for darker skin. Happens in one lifetime as well as through generations. Call it God, nature, evolution...it happens for sure.

In that case, how come Afrikaners haven't turned black by now?

Because they wear clothes which protect them from sunburn and natural selection is no longer operant on the human species anyway. "White" people became white because they needed to synthesie vitamin D from the more diffuse sunlight of northern latitudes and so they lost melanine over many generations. Those that didn't lose melanine had brittle bones due to lack of vitamin D and they died in greater numbers before they were able to reproduce. Since vitamin D can also be gotten from eating oily fish one sees that some human groups residing in the North didn't lose so much melanine, thus populations of perenial fishermen in Europe tend to be more swarthy and Eskimos kept dark complexions.

I know, but someone above seems to think this can happen in one generation :D

I have a photo of me and four other people - one each of English, Trinidadian, Irish and South African descent. I look very similar to the South African (I never sunbathe), but nowhere near as pale as the English and Irish people in the photo. Just don't call me nigga, whitey ;)

Lols, that photo sounds like my last bout of collage days, when me an ivorian a pakistani and a ginger irish lad would walk down the corridors in a line formation deliberatly imitating a Pelican crossing ;)

Less than one. If SAs of European desent didn't have the thought much like England's, a few hindered years ago, that the more tanned the lower ones class, they would tan or go red. Conversely Africans once away from the equarorial sun fade in Europe, they tell me. Look up oxidadtive stress for more info. I take on different tans depending on where I visit, the South of France suits me best.

It's actually british. Prior to the 2nd world war the racist british in canada/usa didn't consider southern & eastern europeaners as being white.

Dear Sir,

European unity is PAN. Whether it be Nordic, Alpine, or Gad.

Examples: Germanic, Slavic, Gad, or Albannic.

Albanians were converted to islam by the ottoman turks. But they are ethnically european.

Nothing is absolute. Maybe 1% is something else.

Gad is Roman or Romanisch.

As for spanish, full spanish is Gad.

Well, I have been living here much longer than you, since 1953, and I have never heard such a thing, even remotely...Who says this?...If an Irish-American asks you what nationality you are, and you tell him 'Polish' or 'Polish-American', he will just consider you that (Polish)...He KNOWS you are White, as this is obvious.

Most Blacks will just see you as White, but if they get to know you, they find out your ethnic group, and then view you a little differently, especially if you are proud of your ethnicity.

are jews white

Yes, but the teaching of their elders tells them they are 'Jews first and seperate'...Of course, many Jews find this a bit nonsensical, but this is why Jewish media, or liberal Jewish media and politicians always play up ethnic differences among other peoples and encourage 'diversity' as witnessed in UK & elsewhere...Because, as a tiny minority, they always play 'divide to conquer'.

As I was saying: If a nation like the USA is being invaded by Latinos, Americans will always express anger at the larger invading group, and forget about the Jewish politicians who pushed for unlimited immigration.

Jews, especially the rich ones, desire 'invisibility'.

I'm Polish and have been living in America since i was a child

Well like you said, these are idiots in America who are saying this. What do you expect from idiots?

Are they saying this based on your appearance? I would guess if you're of Polish ancestry you look white.

Are they saying this thinking you were not born here? Do you have an accent? But even so that should not make you a non-white American. Maybe these are KKK types you are talking to? LOL

I personally have never heard this that you have to be a white American born here to be white. What you say is a new one on me.

If anything, I have heard some of my Italian American friends complain that some white Americans don't see Italian Americans as being white since their origins are from Southern Europe close to Africa. That seemed like a peculiar thing to hear.

As for me, I have never heard anyone say to me that he thinks I am a non-white or foreign born Polish Americans are non-white. In fact, some people I know have even said I have an "All American look". Whatever that means.

I doubt they see me as a white American just because I was born here.

It sounds like, some of these Americans who made those comments to you are just plain dumb.

I agree. I used to work for a German American guy and he said I look like an "All American".... whatever that means.

Most Blacks will just see you as White, but if they get to know you, they find out your ethnic group, and then view you a little differently, especially if you are proud of your ethnicity.

I agree with this too.

In my experiences with African Americans, once you get to know them personally and tell them about your Polish ancestry and Polish history, I find that they are kind of easier to bond with on an individual basis then a non-African American. I think they instinctively see Poland/Poles as a downtrodden country that they can relate to easier then somebody of ancestry from a European country that is all big and bad and powerful.

It should be pointed out that Polish American groups got the support of the African-American caucus in congress, when they were lobbying to get Poland into NATO over a decade ago.

I have found this to be true with all americans that are not of the uptight WASPy variety. I was playing tennis once against a fellow who lived in the same apartment complex as me and so we had read each other's last names on the mailboxes. At one point in the match he wondered about the origin of my surname, and since I am tall and fair-haired, he asked if I was Norwegian. When I told him "No I am Polish" he smiled and said "Hahaha Polack!". To which I replied "So what? You are Greek." He then laughed and said "You have a point." The point being that everyone here in the USA that is not of Anglo stock does feel a sort of solidarity, be it because of darker skin color, or because of "suspect" last names that betray roots far removed from the deck of the Mayflower.

Where you do people get this stuff?

I'm curious... some of you agree that Jews are not white and are the root of all evil (to paraphrase). But, then you also agree with thoughts like these, that those people who are different (whether it be because of darker skin, a strange last name, a Polish history) "feel a sort of solidarity" to one another. Isn't that exactly what you're saying the Jews do? Why when the Jews do this (if they do at all) is that evil, but when you do it, it's fine?

Also... I don't know where in America you live, but I've never heard anything like that where I'm from.

And, lastly, out of pure curiosity: those of you that have commented that you live in the US and (may or may not) have Polish roots -- when was the last time you were in Poland, if ever?

Sarah I have never said this. Serphardic and Mizrahai Jews are white in my opinion, as in caucazoidal featured, and Ashkenazi Jews are obviously white to me because they are usually rather pale, nor do I believe that they are the root of all evil, and You shouldn't quote someone and then ascribe the views of posters above him to him.

But, then you also agree with thoughts like these, that those people who are different (whether it be because of darker skin, a strange last name, a Polish history) "feel a sort of solidarity" to one another. My post was specifically about an instance of Polish-American and Greek-American solidarity on a tennis court in Santa Barbara. I mentioned no Jews, but I know that many Jews in Southern California and the rest of the USA, feel inter-ethnic solidarity with other non-wasps as fellow "outsiders", and I approve of it wholeheartedly.

Also... I don't know where in America you live, but I've never heard anything like that where I'm from.

If you've never heard of Americans from ethnic minorities with histories of oppression feeling solidarity for each other then I pity your region of America.

Where you do people get this stuff?

I wonder where in America you learned Mrs. Malaprop's style.

You seem to have plenty of time on your hands, look it up yourself maybe you'll learn something about your racist limey forefathers.

OK let me for the 20th time rephrase my statement. Some (mostly lower classes) have a saying that not only Polish but all Europeans are not white, they are it's their race but... in America to be labeled as white means you have to be American born (Polish American including). Otherwise ur just European. I've heard this dozens of times.

I might give u a culture in the broadest sense but it is not an ethnicity

If the lower classes you are referring to are black I would say they are just not lumping all whites together. White in America depending which class/race of people you are talking to is not a term of endearment.

Now if you are referring to whites who said this ....I would place these people in some white supremacist group or are just ignorant morons that have not caught up to the rest of society.

Just a note: The sun isn't really that strong in South Africa, nor is it hot. I used to live in Cape Town and it was colder there (during the Summer) than it is in New England where I currently live.

This is the point exactly.

A Polish friend of mine got in a very hairy situation in San Francisco in which she thought she was going to be shot by a black man. However, she told him that although she had white skin, Poles have a black heart and therefore she was this guys 'sister'. It worked! He let her go. This is a true story.
