Getting Confirmation of Citizenship

My granddad is Polish and moved to England shortly after the second world war, my father and mother were both born in England. A few months ago I moved to Wroc³aw, and when I went to register at the town hall, I was told that I could already be Polish and that they will investigate it for me, although I pretty unsure on what this all involves, but I'm very happy that I could already be Polish.

Has anyone been through a similar process to me, and how long did it take, and what paperwork did you send them. I'm worried that it may take many months, and whilst they are doing this, I will be unable to register for long-term stay (It's the law I believe, that Polish citizens can't register for residence), and will need to register every 3 months. Having permanent registration would greatly help me here as I need a car (without reregistering every 3 months), and mobile phone contract.

Is this a long process, in my case it seems fairly simple, and I have everyones birth certificates and a few of my grandfather's record, e.g. Where he lived and worked in Poland. Although I have yet to find information from people who have been succesful and how long it took.

Any help, and especially of people who have been successful will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

George

If you have UK citizenship, do not apply for Polish citizenship. Believe me, a couple of ethnic Poles I know have actually renounced it because they felt it gave the tax office an extra excuse to hound them.
Whether that is true or not, I wouldn't want to find out. I got hounded for a bribe by the tax office in Z...... (you never know who is reading you).

If you have UK (or other EU) citizenship, you can automatically register as resident- it is a simple procedure since EU entry (even simpler if you're paying NI in the UK and have one of those new health card thingies). Have a look at the search function - there are threads already here with up-to-date information.

By the way, if you prefer not to register as resident, and don't mind using prepaid phones you can drive a foreign car here on a licence from elsewhere in the EU, providing you have appropriate insurance, and leave the country from time to time. There may be a time limit but that doesn't seem to deter those who do it.

There are threads about citizenship too or alternatively you can google Ben Szymanski's blog which has quite a bit of info on.
