Hello. My father was born in Jankowce, Poland and my understanding is that all the records were indeed burned during the war. The correct spelling is Jankowce, but the Ukrainian version is spelled and pronounced Jankivtsi. It is near Lesko.

Some Lemko from Jankivtsi landed up in selo Zhnyborody > Buchach district >
Ternopilska oblast > Ukraine. What surname are you researching? mitehelp@aol.com

Are you thinking of somewhere else?? I don't know of any town called Lesko near Jankowicze and its pretty far from the Ukraine.

There were Miszuks living in Jankowicze up to WW2 before they were packed up to Germany for forced labour. (see www.straty.pl) The only Anna Miszuk I know of came to Australia with her son and daughter and grandchildren in the 1950s - i think. Her DOB is 8 Dec 1883. Her son is 79 and is living in Melbourne. But as KS posted - there is quite a bit of family.

My grandfather's name was Stefan Makowski, changed to Makow when he cam to ellis island. my grandmothers name is Elizabeth Makowski ( i am not sure her maiden name) and they have 4 children, John, Stan, Donna, Teresa (Janik, Stash, Donka, Theresa). All i know is that before they came to america they escaped to Gorzno, Poland and i have a few other details and i can ask my grandmother. I would greatly appreciate any help.

My Grandfather listed Jankowce as his birthplace on his USA WWI military enlistment card that I found on ancestry.com

His name was Ignacy Kuczynski on that document yet on a 1930 USA census form, his name is listed as Isaac.

How do I access Jankowce birth records? Thanks for your help.

Scanned copies of the Naliboki Church records - which include other local towns like Jankowicze - are available to view on the facebook page "Polish Nowogrodek Family Ties". The records are in latin but are somehwht easy to follow if you knwo abit of italian/latin ( or you could google translate). The names are 'latinised' versions of the polish names, eg Chrisotphoro = Krzystof etc. The records go back to 1763!
