I live in Canada ~
My family name was changed from Dzyngl to Jingle when my grandfather came from Krakow, Poland with his brothers & sister. He was a carpenter in downtown Toronto. To my knowledge he was born in 1903 and died 1970. From what I understand my great grandmother was burnt to death while her children were hiding under the floor of the home in Poland. I was 6 when I found him on the couch, he had died in his sleep. I have tried to find information about this part of my ancestory but only my mother has told me what I know now. I don't know how to begin. I have 5 children and would like to be able to share valuable knowledge of my family history with them.

Thanks
Jingle

What was his first name ?

What was great-grandmother's name ?

the name Dzyngl doesn't return anything. Polonius3 might be able to help here.

DZYNGL: origin uncertain. Possible but rather dounbtful sources might include: dzynga (a Gipsy percussion instrument incorproating brass cymbals) or dzyndz (cltioris); but I believe the "l" is a key component of this name and therefore the most likely explanation seems to be that dzyngl is a regional version of dzięgiel, a herb known in English as angelica. In view of several localities in Poland called Dzięgiel, Dziegiele, Dzięgielnia, Dziegielów, etc. it might have originated as a topnymic nick.

many thanx P3. this version of the name brings up many results in Krakow and elsewhere.

psyche13,

Please, give the above serious consideration. it's time to double check old documents, ship's records, naturalization papers etc.
