I've tried to find out more about my surname these past days, and since I've never done anything like this before - I don't find it easy.

What I've figured out:

There's about 2-300 people with the last name Niziałek. They're a bit spread out over Poland, but many of them is centered near the place my fathers family comes from. I know I have quite a few polish relatives, but I don't know how many there is who still uses Niziałek as their last name. I have polish relatives in Sweden and Norway. And on facebook there is quite a few with the same last name as me.

I've figured out that the last name means dwarf, or son of a dwarf. Or you could say that Nizi means little, and the ek ending also means little - so it's a dubble "little"? Nizi could also mean downstairs or lower.

When I tried to figure out the main part of my last name "Nizi"/"Nizia"/"Nizial", the only two languages that could translate one of those parts of my last name was Serbian and Croatian. In Serbia and Croatia Niži means "downstairs" or "lower" or "less". Would that mean that my last name was created/started by someone from that region?

Can someone give me some more information about my last name?

Thanks :)

"Niziołek" was one of the translations for Hobbit in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings in Poland.

NIZIOŁEK: archaic for midget, now karzeł. Also Niziałek and Miziołek.

The main stronghold of Poland's some 3,400 Niziołeks is in SE Poland with the largest concentrations in the contiguous Krosno, Tarnów and Kielce areas. As for Niziałek (app. 500 users), the single largest bastion is in around Tarnobrzeg in the same general area. Up till 1918 it was part of the Austrian occupation zone.
