Surely there are some formal registers in Poland for this purpose. In Scotland, such a thing can easily be found in Edinburgh and we are not as record heavy as Poland.

Poland is a real pain when it comes to Genealogy/Family History.

Very few records can be found online.

I've just been to Ancestry.com which is often updated. Every time I visit I find something new. That would be impossible in Poland.

Some records were given to one of the premier sites, but then the Polish government put a stop to it.

As you may know getting a phone number without either an address or name is difficult enough in Poland.

There are vast records in the Polish archive, but as you know some of these secrets lead to TV trials and more. These records are being checked and archived at present. We won't see much online for a long time here.

That strikes me as very odd indeed, Wrocław! They love to discuss their family trees like any other here and Poland also has a noble past. Registers can be maintained through taxpayers money and would be a better bet than this ongoing cross issue.

I'd hazard a guess, though a weak one, that tracing would be a complicating factor that might dissuade them from setting one up. However, the demand would be high as Poles have scattered fairly wide and there are many who want to find those displaced by war or even to find out if their long-lost relatives are still alive and well.

the demand for info is high. it is possible to get some records, but it all has to be done in person or through a genealogy service. plus many people are restricted because they don't speak the language and don't know exactly where their family came from in the first place.
many people limit their search by not reading up on the Partitions, the Pale etc. for Polish genealogy you have to read up on Polish history first.
Also, many shipping records and some others are kept in Germany. and any signs of Poles in Ukraine were wiped off the map by Stalin.

That's also true! The lack of localisation is another feature. Passports have been passed to Dusseldorf and I wouldn't be surprised if more of that happens in the future with other documentation. You are right, Wrocław, there is a lot of in-person contact here. Letters tend just to be declaratory through summons etc.

Polish adresses

Hi,
I'm looking for a friend who's living in Poland.
I've the name of the person, and know which city he lives in,
but that's is all I know.

I wonder if there is a way to find a person in Pl, if there's is like
a polish "eniro" search site, ore if there is any way to get in touch
with this person, ore find a adress atleast.

If anyone can help, ore knows a way how I can find this person,
I would appreciate it a lot.

Ore look for all the people in Pl with the same name, and find him by that?
Like a adressbook?

As I'm not from Poland its very hard for me, so any help would be appreciated.
thank you

The only way you can try to conntact this person is via some social websides (facebook, myspace, nk.pl, goldenline, etc)

One way to find relatives would be any letters that may have been written to the old folks from both sides. That is those that either chose to stay behind or chose (or forced) to emigrate. I had photos of relatives from those that stayed behind and they also had some from this side.
I also had 2 letters that were written to my grandfather plus 2 pieces of paper that had 2 different addresses on the same street in the same town. those 2 pieces gave me the proper spelling of the street. Because of those clues and some old photos I was able to meet relatives I never knew of or about since before my grandparents died.
If you do not have clues like that, one way would be to use census records to determine when your ancestors may have entered the country or from what part they may have moved from. After that using death certificates in regards to proving that the deceased has been dead for a certain length of time (in Canada it is 20 yrs) in order to get copies of any information the immigration records may provide.
Sometimes those records may provide info as to where they left from and in most cases when and where they were born. Before spending money on traveling there, by having info like that, you may be able to find other info through the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons). Those records that they were able to microfilm may contain birth (christening), marriage and death records. From there you may you may be able to determine where they originated from.

Yes go for the last name - you might be surprised.

So many Poles lost their relatives through the uprisings of the 1800s and then through further conflicts that the people with whom you might contact may be delighted to hear from you

Go for it

You could do what I did.
I went to the village the family came from and asked the first person I met if he new the family name.
within a hour I was sat in my cusins house.

Luckely in small villages eveytone knows everyone else, and the family pedigree................. :0)

Not sure if anyone still reads this, but I am trying to trace my familys history via my fathers line, now that he has passed away. All I can find is my grandfathers (William Pick) WWI entry paperwork. Also he listed his fathers name as Frederick Pick, but I cant find any entry records of either of them from Poland to Canada. Is there any place I can go to find out about travel records or birth records circa 1870-96? Thanks
