I am looking for an online translation company that does a good job for a business website. I have been using my Polish friends that speak English well for translations, but speaking is not the same as translating. I get 4 different translations for what I consider one simple phrase. It seems that the tenses are the problem. For example, "Sort by Title", I have "Przyporządkuj wg" and "Porządkuj wg"
So back to my original question. Does anyone know of a company that does good business translations?

I'd suggest it's the fact that your mates don't use Polish language settings on their computers. Convention trumps lexical accuracy in this game. For example, in the bad old days, 'Save as...' used to be rendered as 'Zachowaj jako...' - a bit crap, really. 'Zapisz jako...' is the norm nowadays - a freer translation than the other one, but the metaphor is clearer.

The most commonly used phrase in web pages for the above is in fact 'sortuj wg'. Best thing you can do here - and save a bit of money in the process - is go to a search engine site or banking site - or even, if truth be told, Facebóg - and switch your language setting to Polish. None of the GUI command phrases there are proprietary, just use them; they already have critical mass among users so you don't have to explain.

So much for the interface action commands. What area of business is your site in?

That's sound advice and free. Thanks for it. So the interface and common buttons are taken care of, so now I need the more detailed translations and emails. I am doing a lovefilm, netflix thing. Online DVD and video game rental and perhaps also get into selling if I can figure out the Polish laws for it.

I can recommend http://lingo-poznan.pl/ - the girl who owns the business actually graduated from a UK university in translation, so she has much more of a "real" grasp of translation than the others.

I co-operate and represent a number of freelance translators in Poland under the heading English Language Services, pairing you with a translator specialised in the field relevant to your translation (marketing, banking, sales, engineering, diplomacy.)

You can PM me your details, and I can get in touch for a consultation if you're interested in a professional level of service rather than "mates translates."

I have worked with a few translation agencies for my company and from my experience I would definitelly recomment Codex Group. Their expertise and professionalism in terms of translation expertise is very broad. they also have a project management department which always comes in handy for the services required.
