It's a Christian hymn written by John Newton in XVIII. I will try to find polish lyrics/translation.

Here you have http://www.teksty.org/Religijne,Cudowna_%C5%81aska_Bo%C5%BCa

In Polish it's called Cudowna Boza Laska and it was translated by Adele Bajko.

This is another version in Polish, it’s not exact translation though and there might be others.

Hi Shorthair,

Do you know who sings this and if she recorded it?

This is actually the Catholic version of it - Nim swit obudzi noc.
In protestant churches it's Cudowna Boza Laska and it's more like the English version.
There are lots of it on youTube, ie this

This particular version was by Eleni. I think she did record it for John Paul II it’s called “Panie Przyjdż”

It's actually not. John Newton who wrote the words was an Englishman, curate of Olney, Bucks - the tune 'New Britain' was certainly popular in late 18th and early 19th century America, but appears to have Scottish origins.

Correct. John Newton was actually the captain of a slave trader which plied its trade between Liverpool, North Carolina and the Bite of Biafra. He made 3 voyages, the last being in 1754 when he nearly died from fever and it was then that "he found God" and became an abolutionist. None of his trips were very profitable and the merchants that backed him refused to finance any further journeys. He took the job of "tide surveyor of Liverpool. He wrote "Amazing Grace" in 1773, many years after he had given up the slave trade.

After listening to the hymn I went to my piano to check what key it was sung in. E major.
