It's actually not. John Newton who wrote the words was an Englishman Correct. John Newton was actually the captain of a slave trader which plied its trade between Liverpool, North Carolina and the Bite of Biafra. He made 3 voyages, the last being in 1754 when he nearly died from fever and it was then that "he found God" and became an abolutionist. None of his trips were very profitable and the merchants that backed him refused to finance any further journeys. He took the job of "tide surveyor of Liverpool. He wrote "Amazing Grace" in 1773, many years after he had given up the slave trade.
