Polish letters in MS Word and Excel

I am unable to view most letters unique to Polish (i.e. ł) in Microsoft documents - they show up as an underscore (i.e. s_ownik). Can anyone tell me how to get my American software to recognize these letters? I'm working on a Macintosh if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Tell me more about your computer, Mac 10? Are you using Microsoft Office? 2007 or 97-03? Maybe you only need to change dictionary to polish.
