My dad is 100% polish, but he has not spoken polish (other than curse words) for at least 20 years. Growing up I heard a lot of it, but never understood what it meant or if I even heard the correct words. Here is what they sounded like (if written in english):

Yeah..."I like" is what I meant. When Polish actually becomes an important language, maybe then I'll bother to learn it properly.

Anyway, what's wrong with that? Is it supposed to be uwielbiam?

It supposed to be 'lubię' but you can say 'lubiem' as this version suits you better.

i would like to hear from posters having problems with english/polish slang. here are a couple of examples. ( hope its not too boring ). last time i was in poland i got absolutely soaking wet one day because it was raining really heavily. got back to where i was staying and was moaning to iwona ( receptionist ) that i looked like a drowned rat. she looked puzzled...and the next thing she said was...pam are you made of sugar? you will dissolve/ melt in the rain? is this a typical example of polish slang? also last week my friend jarek came for coffee. dont get to see him too often as he works such long hours. he didnt know my lokator had gone back to poland and i i explained to him that i missed my lokator because we got on like a house on fire. jarek then asked if i would soon have a problem with a fire in my house....guess i need to learn lots more polish....:)

You don't need to learn more Polish, just buy Jarek for Christmas a dictionary of idioms :)

he will be too busy working to spend time with his head in a dictionary. would just like to know if mistakes like these are common when there is a language barrier. would love to hear others...:)

laska is just slang used to describe a hot girl. and it also means a cane or staff.

Hi Noreenb, when I hear Polish people swearing in English it gives me a very bad impression of them, it is just an impression that I get, it may sound ok to Polish people to hear you swearing in English but it is nothing new to an English speaking person. It is a pity that they swear after making such a good impression by speaking English very well.

Anyway, back on topic to slang :-) !

I was just browsing this thread also to see if I was on topic etc. because often my posts get moved around but I see that the standard of moderation is very uneven, sometimes strictly applied and sometimes not at all, many of the above posts should have been moved etc. for being off topic. So bad is the moderation that here is an off topic post by a moderator! :-) :-) I don't take it seriously anymore, it is just an observation.

anyone know what the word pronounced "bayboosh" means I am not sure how you spell it in polish, im guessing babusz

Babusz means nothing, babu¶ - short of babusia, endearing term for a grandmother.

Compare sounds:
Invoke translate.google.com , select Polish => English translation, type these two words - one under the other - in the left pane and hit the speaker icon. You should hear the difference. Do not try it with the right pane; you might get a fit of laughter.

Of course I had to try that, very funny :-)..............now I know why Polish people laugh when I try to speak Polish. It is always good for a laugh :-)
