Polish cholera too started as PIE *ghel- that means to shine; a bright color, thus again not as swearword. Generally, swearing function always comes later, because originally all wors were strictly functional.
Similarly English F U C K started as PIE *bhau- to hit, for example to hit nail with hammer, and English C U N T started as PIE *gen- to bear, produce, thus again not as swear words.
As you see, even modern extremely heavy vulgarisms in PIE were only functional, but not vulgar words at all.
They have a long and interesting history,
but proto-Indo-Europeans must have needed to shout something
when they stubbed their toe or caught their finger on a *sk(h)woj-
For shout something in these cases proto-Indo-Europeans had word *au- that means ow! (exclamation of pain), thus not swear word at all.
