Ale się przestraszyteś

What does it mean literally in English and also what is it's correct translation?
Where I saw it it was translated to 'You got scared' but I thought 'ale' meant 'but'?
Please explain, thanks.

'You got scared'

Translation is correct 'You got scared (surprisingly so much)' in this and couple other cases.

'ale'

conj,
  • 1 but
  • 2 however
  • 3 yet
  • 4 surprisingly so much/a lot

You are so annoying. - Ale jesteś irytujący (wkurzjący)
But why? - Ale dlaczego?
