Good Polish Wines

What are some good Polish wines? I've seen a lot of discussion on beer and vodka and also on wine in general but not on Polish wine.

You will impress her with the price, its very expensive. At one time it was the most expensive wine in the world and its history goes back 1000 years. I've been intrigued by this wine as Wegrzyn is my surname (it means "kin of the Hungarian")

Read up about it, its a very strangely made wine.

It was grown in the Tokaj region and taken over the Carpathian mountains to mature in cellars south of the city of Sanok, in southern Poland. Hence its latin inscription 'Born of Hungary, matured in Poland' (AFAIR)

The reason you cant find much on Polish wine is due to Poland not being a wine region. It is a vodka and beer region. I'd say the wine in Poland comes from Hungary, Spain, Italy and France. Its old school stuff where The European continent was divided into trading and growing rights. I dont reckon it has changed and have not heard of Polish wine before. There is however a lot of excellent liquers and schnapps. Poland also has the best fruit juices you can ever taste. What we call Pro-biotic organic in Australia and UK they call normal in Poland as they dont use chemical traetment on their fruit. Next time you go there perhaps try a vodka a blackberry mixed drink....very tasty.

Zielona Góra is one of two places in Poland with wine growing (mainly white wines; there is another wine growing region near the town of Warka in Masovia).

The first wineries around Zielona Góra were built in 1314. At Paradyż Abbey near Zielona Góra, monks have been making wine since 1250. The number of wineyards at peak production is estimated at 4,000 in the region, and 2,500 in Zielona Góra itself. The most famous wine is called "Monte Verde".

During Communist times, wine production was reduced, but since 1990 it has recovered. However, nowadays wine is no longer produced in Zielona Góra[i][/i] (the last factory was closed in the early 1990s).

I was always wondering why Poland did have a good wine industry - is it the weather, the land or something else? Almost all "old" countries drank wine in the Middle Ages and cooked with it as well (no refridgeration - it killed the taste of bad meat) but did Poland?

Polish wine production is growing, because the wheter is getting warmer and there are new kinds of these fruits, but generally "Polish wine" is in most cases a low cost alcohol, which hardly has anything in common with real wine.

home made fruit wines are still popular in Poland but the alcohol level is much higher than the commercial ones.

I saw a program on TV about Poland and the wines were made with different fruits, besides grapes. But it's hard finding them here in the US. I went to a German store and they had a wall covered with German wines but nothing from Poland. I can't even find any stores that sell them online.

You are absolutely right. There is some really cheap wine sold on the Polish market, but you wouldn't want to drink it.

Shewolf, one of the rasons for luck of polish wines is that there are hardly any wineries and there weather conditions are less than suitable.
Some time ago I have read an article on a Polish men who was setting up a winery, but I cannot reacall where it was.

Do you want Polish wine just for the taste or are your interest more oriented on contacting somebody who actually makes wine comercially in Poland.
My brother in law can give me some clues if you are seriously interested

I'm hoping to just taste the Polish wine since I've never tried it before. I found a company in Chicago stawskidistributing.com and they sell Polish wine in the US. I'm still waiting to hear from them. Thanks for the offer to help. It was so nice of you.

Slim pickings in a few PL liquor/wine stores. There's a nice wine shop in Poz and they had maybe 1 bottle of PL wine. I hear that they're starting to grow more grapes this year..saw it in a news article a few months ago.
My gf's babcia makes homemade wine...really packs a punch
