That's all very well for a couple of words, but what about trying to communicate in longer sentences? Even the most patient native speakers would find it difficult talking to you in Polish. If you are going to learn a second language, then it's best to learn it properly from the start.

If you don't then you will be wasting your time as you will never get to grips with the grammar of this very difficult language. A little at a time is the key, don't run before you can walk, as they say. Good luck with your studies, and try to take in the advice the good people in this thread have already given you.

i hear what you are saying vincent, but i do have conversation with my cousin, so my polish as broken as i t may be is working and my cousin does understand me, she even says my polish is good, maybe not the grammar. i'm sure you will agree that polish is a hard language to learn anyway. what i seek from this site which i have achieved lots of times, is help in getting the further ubderstanding of the prts of grammar that confuse me. someone once told me to understand the past and future tenses, which i do, but your word order is the most confusing issue yet.
i talk to my cousin evry week more sometimes, so i can converse. there are a few holes in my understanding. is that any clearer.

This is good to hear. I can tell that you have put a lot of effort in to your studies in the last 15 months and you're probably more advanced than most people, who have studied by themselves for the same amount of time . As you know, the cases are the most difficult to master and are the hardest part of learning the language, so you will need to give much of your time to studying these. Try picking some short sentences and try to determine which case is used? There will be plenty of clues like word endings and prepositions etc to show you. This is one of the best ways to learn the grammar rules IMHO and will help you to understand why it's better to learn in small steps. If you try to take big steps, it will go over your head and you will learn nothing at all.

Basic sentence structure is very important in any language, confusing or not it’s something you’ll have to deal with, the sooner you realize it the easier the learning process. Rationalizing it will not help you. Just because it makes perfect sense to you in English does not mean it’s the same in Polish and vice versa. If I were to make a direct Polish to English translation, word for word , let’s say; (Ja i Mariola jedziemy nad morze na rowerach) I would say something like [I and Mariola we ride over sea on bicycles], or (Chudego porwała wichura) [ Lean swept gale]. Does that make sense to you? Other times i.e. (Chory został wypisany do domu) [Sick was discharged to home] is easy to make the connection and you know I meant [The patient was discharged home].

Of course you’ll be understood some of the time but more often than not you’ll come up with this sort of nonsense. Basic grammar and sentence structure is very important, it’s easy to pick up bad habits, hard to break them, once you get used to it. Other grammatical errors like which case to use or which word ending is proper you’ll be able to correct on the fly so to speak, learn as you go, making your experience of learning any language that much easier. Don’t take it personally when people emphasize grammar. It’s not meant as an insult to you personally or to discourage you from speaking as soon as possible. Keep at it; it will all make perfect sense soon, you’re doing fine.

I (as someone with a basic knowledge of Polish) understand what you're trying to say, but yes it can be seen that you have translated word by word and sometimes using the words in the wrong context. Keep practising! It'll come.
I presume you're voice chatting with your Polish contact? You should also try typed chats with them occasionally and get them to correct your errors. I've learnt a great deal this way (and by studying grammar!).

Understood, Kali :-) Whenever you have the conversation with your cousin tell him/her to correct you as much as possible. Not bad overall, close to my last example where I'm able to know what you mean. I assume you’re learning on your own?

yes i do have phrases i know by heart, but conversation is the best way, the more yopu speak it the better you will get. and as you know cases and tenses are you worse enemy. and then add to that the word order, and you have a mix of confusion. well!....i do. upto now my communication skill can only go up. chaza
