Word usage: wybierać and wykręcić

hello guys
i am presently doing a polish course, i came across the following;-
wybierać and wykręcić
it confuses me when i get these situations, i understand both mean ' dial'. can you explain their usage.
and in polish!
jestem zmierszany kiedy dostaję te situacja, rozumiem oba znaczy 'dial'. czy mogesz wyjaśniać ich stosuj poprosze.

Wykręcić comes from the word kręcić which means spin and so it originated when phones had this wheel thing to choose the number - at least I think so :)
There is also an idiom "wykręcić komuś numer" which I would translate as "do something which is unexpected and rather unpleasant for somebody else".
It sounds a bit strange when you use "wykręcić" refering to mobile phone.
Wybierać simply means choose and is ok to use for all kinds of phones.

To jest dla mnie niejasne. Rozumiem, że oba znaczą "dial", ale czy mógłbyś wyjaśnić ich stosowanie?

Zdjąłem słuchawkę, wykręciłem 2225886158986. I took the ear piece and dialled 2225886158986. To me wykręcić is the verb for the actual act of dialling the number. You dial a number.

Wybrałem numer centrali, poprosiłem z sekretariatem. I rang the main number etc. This isn't about the phone but about the act of ringing a person or institution. You wouldn't say that you dialled the office to tell them you were sick.

Wybraliśmy Ritz. We rang the Ritz.

i have looked for it in my dictionary but it seems to avade me.
is it from zdjemować to remove/pick up

This is a good online dictionary to find the infinitives of verbs and then it is easier to find them in the dictionary.

zdejmować/zdjąć suggest that something was hanging or put at the top of something so we have to reach for it. Also it means that something is covering another thing and to reveal it you have to put off/pull off the cover/covering thing. That's why we use this verb with e.g. following nouns and pharses:

revealing things:
zdjąć pokrywkę
zdjąć wieczko
zdjąć ubranie
zdjąć okładkę

reaching for things at the top of something or hanging on something:
zdjąć pudełko z szafy (it means that the box was not inside the closet but ouside of it at the top of it pudełko stało na szafie, zdjąłem je).
zdjąć płaszcz z wieszaka (the overcoat was hanging on a hanger)
zdjąć kapelusz z głowy (the hat was at the top of your head)
zdjąć naszyjnik (the necklace was hanging on your neck)

As for the
Zdjąłem słuchawkę, wykręciłem
it's not very correct unless the phone was an old type phone with phone receiver hanging on the hook. General word for picking up the phone is podnosić.
