Great Britain - which countries does it include?

OK I have a question, its not connected wit Poland really but since this forum has so many visitors from Isles, they can explain me this:

What is Great Britain? Does GB include: England, Scotland, Wales, NI? How about Ireland? Can I call english, scottish etc british or only english are british? When I think about Isles should I say that bigger Island is GB and smaller one Ireland? I never really understood this.

Me thinks Great Britain includes England, Schotland, Wales, NI, and Ireland..

I'm sort of busy (cannot slack at work as much as I used to) but should be better soon.

It doesn't include Ireland - they're a separate country they have Irish Passports, only Northern Ireland belongs to England, - We also have the British Isles, which encompass a few little Islands off the coast of England

We are the following

Great Brittan
United Kingdom
England

The Scottish have their own Parliament and the Welsh burn cottages and have their own language

Many of our old colonies have British passports and it would seem a British Passport is vastly becoming an object of every tom dick and harry's desire

So why is NI called NI then? This part of land should be called England.

It's Northern Ireland - the same as Scotland is called Scotland and Wales called Wales - they are part of Great Britain but they're separte, in Scotland they have different money, it's printed by the Bank of Scotland - the currency rate is the same but the bank notes are different.

The history of how Ireland became part of England is actually very interesting, have a read.

Although England conquered Ireland (North and South) in the late 1400's and early 1500's, opposition to the English continued. Eventually in 1800 an Act of Union brought the whole of Ireland officially into the Union. This was technically a negotiated Union, but in reality only about 10% of the Irish people could vote.

After World War I (1914-1918) civil unrest (specifically the Easter Uprising) resulted in the Irish Treaty of 1921 and thus created the current division of Ireland. The south half of Ireland became the Republic of Ireland and the northern six counties stayed with the UK and became known as Northern Ireland.

From 1922 for 50 years, Northern Ireland governed itself. However, in 1968 civil unrest between Catholics and Protestants started and in 1972 Westminster intervened, took over government, and deployed British troops.

In 1998 a general referendum was held in both halves of Ireland with a majority vote for a Northern Ireland Assembly. However at the time of writing this Assembly has been suspended.

Allright so:

GB = England + Scotland + Wales
UK = GB + NI
British Islands = UK + the Channel Islands + the Isle of Man (whatever )

Correct me if Im wrong.

To add to the confussion, there is also the Scotish Isles and cluster of beautiful islands off the coast of Scotland

Many people like myself believe Northern Ireland sholuld be Irish and not under British rule. But this debate could go on for ever..

Decorator - People in Northern Ireland dont want to be part of the South - lose all the benefits they get from the UK!!!!! I like to know who these many people are!

One more thing: scottish, welsh and english can all be called british. n irish are not british because NI isnt part of britain? so irish are irish and the rest is british?

People in Northern Ireland are British too because it's part of Great Britain

According to bolo's link they are not part of GB, but they are part of UK.

No, it shouldn't be called England. As i understand;

England is only the part of the UK.

The UK consists of Great Britain and NI.

Great Britain is the biggest island, combination of England, Scotland and Wales.

Ireland is the the 2nd biggest island. And NI is the part of this island and which is also the part of the UK.

So the name of NI is just like the other names as England, Scotland and Wales, which are all part of the UK.

The Catholics in NI do not want to be part of Britian...........what a crock of s***!

As for try the Catholics - thats an old one now...move on even the IRA have moved on, I think it's time you did.

I pretty much think the same as poster myself. GB is only name of the "bigger" Island. Uk is the name of Union of 4 countries and N. Irish are not british but they are part of UK.

Not an old one at all girl. Did you say the same before Hong Kong was handed back.. Why should people forget their history? that's like saying forget about the war etc etc.

They all have british passports!!! does not your passport tell you what nationality you are????? unless you have taken on another nationality!

I'm in no way saying people should forget their history - I dont recall intimating that???? Look - Ireland will never be united, not in my life-time anyway.......give it up and stop starting age old arguments that are best left alone!

I hardly think I'm an oaf, my education was of a high standard hence the reason I'm not poxy painter....and as for the Northern thing, I'm quite proud of where I come from it's a damn site cleaner and prettier up here than it is down where you are!!!
