When I telephone my friend in Poland, he answers the telephone and says (what sounds) like: Helo, soham - what do you think he is actually saying and what does it mean?? Thanks

I think that you can also use słucham for the English word "pardon" for example if you can't hear someone you can say to them "słucham?" :)

Hi!

Many nationalities have different ways of answering the phone. For example, the Poles say "Słucham!", Spanish speakers "Digame!", German speakers often simply announce their family name, e.g. "Mueller am Apparat!", Hungarians say "Tessek!", Chinese "Wei!", the Japanese "Mushi, mushi!", the French just "Allo!" and the list goes on!

If someone well known is calling some people also say:" Opowiadaj" when picking up the phone.
It means 'tell me your story'.

Cześć, 'Bromberger'!!-:)

Bardzo interesujący. Nigdy nie wiedziałem, Panie Cinku. Ale nie jestem Polakiem.
'Bromberg' znaczy Bydgoszcz po niemiecku. Wielu polskich miast ma/miał/ niemieckie nazwiska, n.pr. 'Bytom' = Beuthen, 'Jaśna Góra' = Hellberg, 'Poznań' = Posen, 'Wrocław' = Breslau itd....
