Books on the Partitions of Poland?

Hello all, I'm new to polishforum.com

I was wondering if anyone knows any good books that talk about the Partitions of Poland in the later half of the 18th century. I'm going to have to write a major essay on a topic of my choice for a history class in the coming months.

It will be kind of painful, I love my country and its people and don't like to see it destroyed, but its a topic that I know very little about.

Thanks in advance,
Nowak

I don't know of any specific books on the subject, but every decent book on the history of Poland will tackle it. Any of the books on the history of Poland covering the relevant period by Norman Davis (a Welsh historian) will tell you the information on the partitions that you need (all his books were published both in English and in Polish).

You can start with:
- Robert Howard Lord's The second partition of Poland: a study in diplomatic, 1915 - I know it, it's good indeed but some remarks on the first partition I disagree.
- Herbert H. Kaplan's The first partition of Poland, 1962 - I haven't read it yet.
- Baron George Shaw-Lefevre Eversley's The partitions of Poland, 1915 - some way old
- Jerzy Lukowski's The partitions of Poland: 1772, 1793, 1795, 1999 - not read

... and then maybe something in Polish.

or feel free to ask for some details here.

Thanks a bunch, I'll definitely check those out.

So far I've got God's Playground, Norman Davies and The Polish Way, Adam Zamojski

God's Playground, Norman Davies

Beware with details from Davies - he's missing and outing some balls in his Playground.
