Well, if this is not a joke, than Poland has something to be proud of ... :D

"An international team of distinguished professors have completed 20 years of painstaking research into (Christopher Columbus') beginnings.

The fresh evidence about Columbus’ background is revealed in a new book by Manuel Rosa, an academic at Duke University in the United States.

He says the voyager was not from a family of humble Italian craftsmen as previously thought - but the son of Vladislav III, an exiled King of Poland".

there...I wish the media would more concentrate on that!!!

The Vikings do get credit in school nowadays, but for years it was only Columbus.

It's a big New World though, they could split it into North and South discoveries and share the glory.

it's not fresh evidence. i was given a convincing theory about his understanding of language and sailing skills... twenty years ago. and of course the fact that he may have been Polish.

Isn't there a calendar written in stone in a cave somewhere in the U.S. that proves that the Irish or "Celts" were there long before the others?

I always thought Amerigo Vespucci is credited for having discovered America and that's where the name America came from.

And the Chinese are also thought to have discovered America.

Even there you will find Polish accent. I once read that there were two Poles that took part in that voyage Wyzdarwoda and Tyrker according to some old Icelandic Saga where they were mentioned, although some think that Tyrker himself might have been German from Bavaria. According to the Saga it was him that pointed out the vine plant with which he was very familiar and for which the new land was named. There also was an article in Journal de Genève in the 60’s where some lunatic claimed that Leif Eriksson himself was Polish borne in Kołobrzeg and he as his direct descendent has proof to back up his claim. Both of those were never explored any further so just file them under science fiction for now and treat it as an interesting bit of trivia.

The daily mail are anti EVERYTHING that isn't white, British, aspiring-to-middle-class and conservative.

ALL immigrants and the unemployed are are particular target. The Irish come in for a fair bashing usually too - and this will only get worse in the current climate.

It's an absolute rag.

I actually wouldn't trust or associate with anyone who buys it as it says a lot about them.

I'm not sure about that but I remember either hearing or reading a report of Europeans, Including Irish speakers, encountering native Americans and one of the Natives spoke some words of Gaelic.

By rights it should not be Columbowicz (which would have meant 'Kolumb's son') but Krzysztof Władysławowicz or, in older Polish, Władysławic.
My Spanish aint' that good so could anyone tell me if it would be Ladislarez (patterned on Spanish patroynmics such as Gonzalez, Perez, Sanchez, Fenandez et al), or does that hold only for indigenously Spanish Christian names? Władysław is Ladislao in Spanish.

I don't give a flying f if Columb had any Polish roots. And yes I'm Polish (where are all those guys who complain on Poles being too much... polocentric?)

Come on, it's obvious why the Italian myth came out. If Columbus had arrived in US and said he was Polish he'd have been refused a visa.

This is just a guess but Władysławic would probably be translated to Ladeslavo because slavic is eslavo in Spanish. From there it might become Ladeslaves for "the son of" but I doubt those names exist. Ladislao is probably correct for both names or maybe even Ladislaos to make it plural.

Surely the first people to discover America were the natives. Perhaps centuries before the Vikings, the Mayan and Aztec might have travelled from their lands and "Discovered" America.

I think history in Norwegian history books kind of focu too much on Viking era.

They should more focus on how the constitution was made in 1814 and how we got to be in a Union with Sweden...

But but... We dicsovered America! ;D

Yes, the natives did travel from Asia to the Americas as we all know but the explorers were talking about discovering the land that no one else but the natives had found or inhabited. They probably figured the natives had always been there.
