delphiandomine: I think if the Poles had a well-equipped guerilla army with the sole intention that the army would blend in with civilians, Stalin wouldn't have wanted anything to do with it. I've always, always wondered why Poland tried to fight a conventional war - if she had learnt the lessons from the Irish War of Independence, she might very well have survived intact. That tactics with ruthless opponent is no good, destroyed towns, murdered civilians, been there in 1863, regular army is must for victory.
