"I really wasn't used to the hook yet."

killer.....

Des Essientes:
My niece attends a rather hippy-ish private primary school here in California and it bans pirate costumes from its Halloween celebrations because pirates still exist, especially in South-East Asian waters, and they are brutal murderers.

Oh,thats priceless,I thought my mum was at bonkers hippy level mark 9 ( I wasnt allowed toy soldiers or army guns, but, could have toy knights and cowboys and indians and cowboy guns.....) but,wow....reminds me of a lecture me and a couple of mates got about the horrors of napalm after being caught playing a rowdy game of Zulus and Red Coats aged 9 by one of our more lfty teachers.......pointing out that they didnt have napalm in 1878 didnt do me any favours, but pointed out to the know it all git I try not to be to this day :)

The school my niece attends bans all toy guns and once one little boy was even sent home for the day because he pretended a bent stick was a gun and "shot" at his classmates!

It's certainly getting worse month by month off the coast of Somalia. A real problem. And the Somali pirates are getting bolder. Certainly none of them are Polish, but some of the crew members taken by them are.

I have to do a course soon about what to do if attacked by pirates. Should be interesting, but I hope I'll never need it.

You escape by plunging a knife into a sail and sliding down holding the handle.

"We can hardly exclude Polish pirates in the famous Klaus Störtebeker's Victual Brothers (German: Vitalienbrüder) but no historical proofs as far I know."

BB, no historical proofs for Poles present in Störtebeker's crew, that's what I mean.
Störtebeker was a well known and historically proven Robin Hood (captain Hook ?) of Alemannia :)
No doubt about his existence !

I can imagine a pirate yelling kurwa!Kurwa enemy ship in horizon.Etc.However as we know the biggest pirates in Mediteranean were Berbers and Greeks and the latter paid a huge contribution to greek revolution against Turks by turning several turkish battleships into candles.

The United States of America fought its first overseas war against the Berber pirates from 1801 to 1805.

Yes,the Barbary pirates were the most successful.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_pirate

''From the 16th to 19th century, pirates captured an estimated 800,000 to 1.25 million people as slaves.''

Once they even invaded England and thousands of blonde english women were sold in the slave bazars in Tripoli.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/empire_seapower/white_slaves_01.s html

Slaves were at that time equal opportunity.

''Slaves in Barbary could be black, brown or white, Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Jewish or Muslim.''

Aye, sails were never a single sheat of canvas,he'd get tangled every 6 feet or so in the rope and stiching ....but sshhhh, its a movie :)

hence "...to the shores of Tripoli.." in the USMC Hymn.

They regularly raided the south west coast of england and southern Ireland, did it hundreds of times over the centuries,an entire village also disapeared in ireland.

That, and the fact that his wrist wouldn't be strong enough to support his own load... Oh, also, his rate of descent would probably result in broken ankles, at the very least!

So adding any Polish pirates to "Pirates of the Caribean" would be "wrong"?

Ignacy Blumer (O'Bloomer) but you won’t find this interesting trivia in his English biography as not to tarnish his good name.

An interesting guy.

Searching for him, I found this, about some other Polish pirates - a big surprise! I suspect very few people, even in Poland, know about these guys. You learn something new every day.

Good find: Olszewski exploits were published in a Warsaw weekly “Wêdrowiec” at the end of the 19th century.

Sorry, those are primarily Swedish pirates (Vikings lol).

"...The Pirate Bay was started by the swedish anti copyright organization Piratbyrån in the late 2003, but in October 2004 it separated became run by dedicated individuals..."
