Just found this site. This is how Warsaw was seen in the eyes of the world before WW1 and WW2.

With its large population, its beautiful river, its ample communications and its commerce, its university and scientific societies, its palaces and numerous places of amusement, Warsaw is one of the most pleasant as well as one of the most animated cities of eastern Europe. From a military point of view Warsaw is the chief stronghold for the defence of Poland; the Alexander citadel has been much improved, and the bridge across the Vistula is defended by a strong fort, Sliwicki.

You can read more about Warsaw here.

To bad Poland did not rebuild the city to its former glory and instead build those ugly Concrete buildings... Thanks Russia for giving us Communism!

You can also thank them for "Alexander citadel has been much improved, and the bridge across the Vistula is defended by a strong fort, Sliwicki. "

Does it say how many Jews lived there? Ive a gazateer from 1898 that tells at the bottom of each entry how many Jews lived there...............a strange obsession .....especially for a British publication.....

I used to have the whole set of the 1939 edition in which Warsaw was described as 'one of the most beautiful cities in Europe'

I doubt many would argue with that, the footage and photos i have seen ,of the better parts of town, certainly dont belie the place's beauty :)

I believe it was the last Polish king Stanislaw Poniatowski who invited the finest architects of Europe to build Warsaw into a beautiful city.

If you'd been to Warsaw you might know that half of the buildings you posted photos of still exist today (and if you knew your history you'd know that another of them was demolished in 1962).
