Warsaw - under whose occupation in late 19th century?

A question to the historians and history buffs on PF.... I believe Warsaw was in the Prusuian partition zone and in 1918 Poles in Warsaw disarmed German soldiers (who afctually let themselves be disarmed). That all makes sense. However, why were all the shop signs in Wokulski's Warsaw in Polish and Russian? Did a border shift occur between the partitioning pwoers at that time?

Whats WWI?
During the WWI Germany and Russia were enemies. Is that answers your query ?

Warsaw was most definitely in the Russian sector (until 1915 anyway).

"Following the Congress of Vienna of 1815, Warsaw became the centre of the Congress Poland, a constitutional monarchy under a personal union with Imperial Russia"

Warsaw:
- was Prussian from 1795 to 1806,
- 1806 - 1812 Polish/French
- 1812 - 1831 Russian with a degree of autonomy
-1831 - 1915 Russian
- 1915 - 1918 German
- 1918 - 1939 Polish
- 1939 - 1945 German
- 1945 - 1989 Soviet/Polish
That just from the top of my head.

You mean Polish: those guys were Poles, not citizens of the USSR.

do you suggest Harry that because these guys were Polish they were immune to Soviet bullets? - how many troops the Soviet had in Poland Harry? and how many NKVD or KGB agents?

Harry, I once read a reference somewhere to Poland becoming part of the Soviet Union as the "Polish SSR" - do you know anything about this?

The Polish army was infiltrated by Soviet citizens which spoke poor Polish (maybe they had some Polish background from their tip tip tip grandfather but, that doesn't help much... Look at Putin he had a Polish grandmother... He is still Russian)

Nobody's. It was not occupied. It was however part of the Russian Empire at that time.
