Who's bored of the traditional WWII threads? We did that, you did this, if it wasnt for us etc etc..

I thought id try this one out. Lets get started with Britian without any research two weapons spring to mind.

Spitfire:

Probably saved Britian from nazi invasion, a superb invention and most importantly better than its adversary the Me 109. Faster, more manouverable.

Gammon grenade:

A heavy grenade with enough power to knock the tracks off a tank, in Stephen E Ambrose's book Band of Brothers it was the grenade of choice for the 101st of the 506.

Undoubtably Germany will top the table for superior weapons and if we get that far i look forward to firther discussion.

In my opinion one of the worst weapons was the US designed and built Sherman tank. The Gerries referred to them as - Tommy cookers or something. So many design faults: high turret, poor armour, no deflective capabilities and the worst of all it ran on petrol. How we won the war with those as our leading tank surely comes down to numbers and tank crews only.

Spitfire:

Hurricane

Did most of the work but got less of the glory.

De havilland mosquito-beautiful plane made mostly of wood.

Goering had this to say about the aircraft...

"In 1940 I could at least fly as far as Glasgow in most of my aircraft, but not now! It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy.

The British, who can afford aluminium better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that?

I know, it was the real work horse of the RAF, stable fire its a shame they never mastered the cannon that would have really reaked havoc amongst the luftwaffe.

Goering said all that? whats his point the Mosquito flew further due to its weight?

Sorry to say it but the Germans did a real job with the V-1 and V-2 rockets, nicknamed Doodlebugs. They caused havoc and were very advanced compared to anything the allies had to play with.

These things flew fast & high and could not be shot down. Apparently the most frightening thing about them was the droning noise they made - as soon as the noise stopped, it was time to run away!

The tank on its own is worth a mention we invented it, shame we didnt build a superior one.

I liked the crocodile tank, a Sherman towing a gas trailer with a flame thrower.

I think we made up for that with the Challenger 2 - In my opinion the best modern tank in the world!

Upon the Air Ministry's decision to enter the Mosquito into production in 1941, it was the fastest operational aircraft in the world.

Nice, i didnt know that

The aircraft carrier. Invented during WWI used in WWII conducting several succesfull enemy raids with Bi-Planes and torpedos.

Torpedos!! probably another British invention although im not sure

I think they were an American invention.

A not-well-known **************** British WW2 weapon was the Welrod sometimes called the Assasin's Pistol. This was a silenced pistol used by special forces and resistance groups. It was designed to be used point-blank and was a real man-stopper.

The T-34 tank, the mobility in all weather condition was the key to it's success.

Tommy cookers

And the allies called em the ronson....sure to light first time.....The biggest problem with the sherman was that the stowed ammo was not well protected , so any round penetrating the tank would invariably set the ammo on fire....

Ok i've got a few weapons of WWII:

Panzer VI Tiger:

A heavy tank constructed to counter the T-34 tank of the Soviet Union, this has to be one of the best WWII Tanks about with awesome firepower and heavy armour.

Tiger Tank

Panzerschreck:

I think it means something like 'Tank Terror' or 'Tank Killer' either way this is what i call a 'boomstick!!!' Tanks are tough but take one of these in the wrong place and its of to the tank heaven in the sky

Panzerschreck

Lancaster Bomber:

The Lancaster bomber was the main 'heavy' bomber used by the RAF after its intro in 1942, not only could it drop a lot of bombs in one flight but also had a front, mid and rear gunner to give a much larger area of vision for defense of the bomber.

Lancaster Bomber (avro)

of course there are lots more but i thought i'd start of with these.

This was simply a copy of the American made Bazooka - the Germans copied the specification exactly.

Care to explain the pictures?

1. Maus superheavy tank 190 tonnes of weight, 128mm main gun, two prototypes were made, the thing was torturously slow and few bridges could take it, it was supposed to be followed by a 1500 tonne landcruiser tank.

2-4 experimental mine clearing vehicles, 3rd one is American i think.

5. Russian transport plane, dont remember the type but it was experimental, it was boeing sized and they even tried to slap some armored turrets with huge caliber guns onto it.

6. pre-war experimental Tsar tank, Russians tested it but it kept toppling over because of these huge wheels plus they were pretty fragile with all these spokes so they scrapped it.

7. tankplane, Russians took the all-terrain concept to the limits and tried to make an armored airplane that could fight equally well on land and in the sky.

Also Germans were on their way to build this:

img245.imageshack.us/img245/8052/tyjeryjtrhbdf.jpg/image.jpg

img340.imageshack.us/img340/189/tyjrhetgdfbvdf.jpg/image.jpg

Ratte - 1500 tonnes, main gun taken off a battleship and about 20 other guns slapped in various places, they actually made a turret for that thing but didnt make it in time with the rest before the war was over.

Actually no, they made it a lot better having about 4 times the effective range of the American models.

ME 163 and ME 262 were well advanced for the period although largely ineffectual.

The Wonderwaffe were developing some amazing weapons - infra red guidance systems, air defence missiles, missiles launched from submarines etc etc

and of course...die glock !

the panzershreck was a hell of a weapon - that's true - and so bloody cheap too - they eventually even started to work on a anti-aircratf sort of homing missile launcher (such Kraut Schtinger ;)

Stuka Dive Bomber:

Nothing made a sound like a diving Stuka, wouldn't of liked to of been an allied convoy on dead ground hearing those mother humpers coming from the sky, the definition of death from above.

Nebelwerfer or as the US GI called them "Screaming Mimis" were pretty effective. Luckily, all that damn smoke gave away their position and arty could pick them off eventually.

the safe bet is that Gerry designed it, built it and used it first. I bet the Russians paid some Gerry to hand over the blue prints/sent spies in to find out, then redesigned, rebuilt their own version and then used them :):):)

Those Ruskies are sneaky little.......... Ivan didn't have a clue when it came to doing something itself but when it came to stealing the information or bribing people for it, they were the bee's knees.

They were developed independently. Germans had rocket artillery about 1 year before the Russians.

Sorry no, Russians designed their own, built their own and they turned out to be significantly better then the German ones.

You're an idiot or an American, in 1940 Russians had the best tanks, the best artillery their purpose built PPSH was a beast in urban and assault fighting, in land combat Russians were 3 years ahead of Germans in 1940.

Matter of fact they matched the West in airplane quality and surpassed them in every other respect during WW2.

Kown as "Moaning minnies" by the Gerries or something similar still not googling!

Depth charges

Germany vs the Allies: Its like two guys squared off in a pre fight, both dont really want to fight and are using harsh language. All of a sudden one throws a very hard punch to the jaw, it hurts and almost sends the recipient flying but the aggressor was unaware of his hosts real power, hes harder, faster and posseses more resolve.
