how long are you over for? If it is less than 12 months you may have difficulty, landlords have a big preference for that. What uni are you going too (main, technical, medical), this determines which part of the city is best for you. There are some English speakers here but few Irish. The main Uni has English speakers of many nationalities in the Mitaiki halls but it is an awful dump. It was done up this year but I'd call it a last resort. best to find private accommodation. Use the uni offices or website to find other English speakers interested in private rentals. By the way you will find almost every polish uni student has excellent English, and love to practice.

You should get a room for about 700pln and a studio for about 1000pln, both plus utilities. These range hugely from 200pln per month, up to perhaps 1500pln per month in winter depending on type of heating. Avoid anywhere with electric heating and you should consistently be in the lower range. ask a potential landlord what it cost last year, it won't be any colder than that for a long while.

do you play rugby? that's how i set up a social network in lodz. http://www.gentlemensrc.pl the coach is Irish and only 26, drinks like a 17YO though!

Landlords will take people on 12 month contracts first, then consider less. At the end of this month and take a shorter term but if you need somewhere ASAP you might have difficulty.

As a stopgap look up flamingo hostel. Below are snips from another thread on similar request.

Write me at thesearles@gmail.com about Lodz temp housing.

We have a friend with a nice apartment in the city center, 20 minute walk to Manufactura or 5 minute tram with a stop near the apartment. It is 1 bedroom + living room, kitchen. It's 1 minute from Piotrkowska (the main central street). When are you coming to Lodz?
Thanks alex lodzrentals@gmail.com

check that www.lodzisyours.com 5 minutes walk from manufaktura

other main housing websites are:
www.gratka.pl www.daft.pl www.allegro.pl www.gumtree.pl are places to look first. download google translate toolbar and the page will automatically translate for you.

For an Irish intro to Lodz P.M. username: Frodo on this site or mail him at montreux_9@hotmail.com

Piotrkowska and manufaktura are where you'll end up for a pint, prices vary hugely 5-9pln. Beer is much stronger than at home so pace yourself. don't mix beer and vodka, big schoolboy error. Another Irish lad we met for the first time did a few months ago. Was so bad he imagined he was mugged on the way home! retraced his steps next day and realised he did all damage to himself!

Just be smart about it, like anywhere there is trouble if you look for it in lodz. Avoid the football fans/heads. e-mail the langer above as he's always looking for a drinking buddy.

I actually got excited reading this... So the only thing we English speakers from South Africa that's been here for 10 days now have to do is look, and we will find other English speakers! Fantastic!!
