How do I recognise "fresh" topics?

It seems that I'm constantly logged in. How can I see which topics have been replied to last time I visited? On other forums eg. the icon of a thread will have another colour if there's been replied to it since the last time you logged on. Is there such a thing with this software here?

Just click on the "Checker" link (upper-left menu, right of the "Settings") and follow the instructions.
