Poland's Unemployment Rate Declines

Poland's unemployment rate dropped to 14.4 percent in March from 14.9 percent a month earlier, the Labor Ministry said Thursday, citing preliminary figures.

Poland's economy grew at an annual rate of 5.8 percent in 2006, and analysts say it has picked up its pace in the first quarter of 2007.

Official statistics are expected in late April. However, those data seldom diverge by more than one-tenth of a percentage point from the preliminary figures.

The ministry said some 2.23 million people were registered as unemployed in March. A year earlier, 2.82 million were registered as unemployed, for a jobless rate of 17.8 percent.

Poland's jobless rate has gradually declined since its post-1989 peak of 20.7 percent in February 2003, but remains the highest in the expanded European Union.

Poland's President Lech Kaczynski has said that Poland will drop a veto blocking talks on a new partnership and cooperation agreement between the European Union and Russia when it has guarantees that Moscow will lift its embargo on imports of Polish meat and plant products.

Even with the help of Poland’s top rower in their boat, Oxford lose the 153rd annual boat race with Cambridge

In a tight race on Saturday afternoon on the Thames, student Michal Plotkowiak and the rest of the Oxford team lost the lead after halfway and saw Cambridge row on to win the race from Putney to Mortlake.

only prob with the BBC one is it only really has stats on it. You need to go to the general European News section at:-

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/default.stm

and check out the headlines, there only seems to be a couple of stories a week though.

I think there should be separate theme on main menu: how to find news about Poland on line. Many people out there don`t know how to find it, and how to watch latest news from Poland. For free.

there is a link tvp.pl .you can watch polish news (teleexpress, wiadomosci, panorama ect) but only in polish so you have to be quite fluent to understand.if you guys are learning polish try to listen to the news cos most of tv presenters speak slowly and clearly(avoid teleexpress though! )

Google said it expects the Wroclaw, Poland, center to employ more than 200 people within the next year or two. Wroclaw has already attracted a number of foreign investors in recent years, including Hewlett-Packard, General Electric, Siemens AG, and Nokia.

Google plans to open an operations center in the Polish city of Wroclaw later this year, creating 200 new jobs and boosting the city's efforts to become a technology hub, officials said Thursday.

Obligatory uniforms in primary and middle schools

As of September uniforms will be mandatory in Polish primary and middle schools.

The resolution was passed by the Lower Chamber of Polish parliament, which approved the Senate's amendment to the Educational System Act.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Education Roman Giertych, appealed to MPs to accept the amendment. “There are funds in the budget to purchase several thousand outfits for the poorest children,” Giertych assured.

The Lower Chamber has also accepted an amendment, according to which the schools will be able to choose up to three textbooks for each subject at a given level of education.

There won’t be any restrictions as to the choice of curriculum either.

Thirty eight MPs voted against the amendment, 338 were in favour of it, nobody abstained from voting.

The Ministry of Education wanted schools to choose only one textbook, but restricting the choice of textbooks to three means that things will stay as they are now.

Minister Giertych explained that presently very few schools use more than three textbooks. He pointed out that restricting the choice to only one would cause a greater circulation of second-hand books, so they eventually would become cheaper.

“I hope that after reconsideration Law and Justice will come back to talks about one, cheap textbook” the Minster said.

“First and foremost we think about parents’ pockets, but this case concerns also booksellers, producers and textbooks’ authors” Law and Justice MP Tadeusz Cymanski explained.

According to Cymanski, the Higher Chamber’s amendment, "...means progress and is a step in the right direction."

The Educational System Act now goes to the President for signing.

A couple of days ago I heard on a polish radio in Chicago a description of polish immigration to UK:

1. Bociany (storks) - about 20%. They come in the spring and leave in the fall. Mostly students or young, married people. They work a lot and save.

2. Chomiki (hamsters) - 20%. Mostly married. The stay a year or two. They know they are going back. So, they work a lot, save every penny with a goal in mind: a new car, home remodeling, any luxury big ticket needs or wants.

3. Buszujacy (prowlers - loosely translated) - 40%. Mostly single, divorced, married but not committed in their 20's, 30's, 40's. They go to UK to "see what happens". They pick up any type of work, because they don't know if they want to stay or go back...They don't know how long they want to stay. They work, they play. No firm goals. They are most likely to cause trouble or get in trouble.

4. Salmon (lososie) - 20%. They left Poland and they are not going back. They work hard, they go to school, they socialize. They also save to build their new lives.

UK dwellers, is there any truth to it? Which type of a Pole do you come across most often?

Grzegorz! my english isn't good enough to take part in this forum. However there was an articke in wp.pl yersteday thur.10/05/07 about cartoon published in prestigious izraeli newspaper which polish jews as well as polish ambasador complain about - now in polish apology to everyone - trzy zydowskie dziewczynki uciekaja przez las, jedna przewraca sie, kolezanka uspakaja - teraz jestes wystarczajaco brudna, zeby wygladac na polke, wsiadaja do pociagu gdzie pijani oblesni polacy i wyluzgane polki pija, rozpoznaja zydowki i zamierzaja je przekazac niemcom za wiecej wodki. Byc moze znajdziesz w archiwum.

By the time the European soccer championships begin in Poland and Ukraine in 2012, Poles could be carrying euros instead of zlotys in their wallets-just in time to use the single European currency to pay for game tickets.

I have a feeling our economy will explode in 2012 (in a good way) thanks to the Euro 2012.

"Kaczynski's conservative and nationalist government is on a drive to purge public life of former communists and symbolic reminders of Poland's submission to Russia".

The're talking about removing/changing street names and removing statues/monuments. Does anyone think they will actually get this accomplished? As far as the monuments are concerned, I think many people look at these as art. Will the removal cause any issues amung the people?

Does anyone in PL even have an opinion about this?

When I visited Gdansk, I saw that there was a leaf placed over the genetalia of the Neptune statue. This was placed there only recently.... doesn't this deface someones hardwork?
