International and truly famous Polish artists?

Can anyone name any Polish actors, artists, musicians who are truly internationally famous? Apart from a few riding on the back of the Solidarity era such as Wajda, Kieslowski, Stuhr, Gorecki, Abakanowicz, Balka, people that nobody in the rest of the world mentions anymore.
Why is Polish music so embarrassingly bad, pastiches of hip-hop, rap, dance, usually sung by people who are old enough to know better? What happened to the great Polish jazz scene?
Why hasn't Poland produced an internationally applauded movie since about 1980 and whatever happened to Hannah Schygulla?
Oh, and by the way Polanski doesn't count!

Had a look at those threads, thanks for passing them on but I was thinking more about todays stars rather than the 'ancient names' and a couple of seventy year old jazzos who, quite frankly, also are not widely known outside PL.
I also don't class the bands, musicians, Polski 'superstars' who come to play for a few dozen Poles in pubs in the UK as internationally famous.

Kapela ze wsi Warszawa (Warsaw Village Band) was nominated for the "Newcomer" award in the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards in 2003, and won it in 2004

good point, just because it was not famous doesn't mean it is not good.

First of all If It is not English speaking movie then It has very little chance to become "internationally applauded".

correct, but who cares. There are a lot of good Polish movies being made and som egreat music being played and composed in Poland - so, I am happy.

Well, off the top of my head... a few international hits in their original language
Guillermo dell Toro with the utterly fab 'Pan's Labyrinth' (Spain)
Alejandro Inarritu (Mexico) 'Amores Perros' and then breaking into the English speaking market with '25 Grams' and 'Babel'
All the Pedro Almodovar movies of course, all in Spanish.
Patrice Leconte movies (French)
Luc Besson returning to the flick scene with the French language 'Angela'
Wim Wenders films in orig German like 'Wings of Desire'
Wolfgang Becker's 'Goodbye Lenin'
All the Aki Kaurismaki films (Finnish).. Might as well throw in the current popularity of Bollywood internationally
must dash dinner is ready. If you want more let me know

Oh yeah! and if you want some even more obscure language films making it big everywhere I've just remembered the Korean language 'Oldboy' and follow up "Lady Vengeance' by Choi Min-Sik. I think there is a third one but I can't remember what it's called.
If the 'Ah...' is a sarky comment because you ain't heard of Kaurismaki then I suggest you get out to the movies a bit more. I would recommend 'Leningrad Cowboys go America' for starters

Skalpel

Thanks Mermaid
I really enjoyed that Skalpel track. If I bought one of their CD's for a mate, who is a Jazz obsessed DJ, which one would you recommend?

don't be afraid because it is. the "english" part of the deal is the deal breaker.. how many italian. brazilain, mexican bands do you know of? even german (swedish) stuff isn't all out there unless it is in english.

i think that polish music is awesome.. so i guess your opinion just differs with mine.

why doesn't polanski count? i bet you'll find a disqualifier for just about anything. maybe you should cheer up.. thigs indeed look different when you're not so negative. :D :D
