There's safety in numbers and yet his control over the people is so sad. In the USA a civil war would have taken place long ago. Maybe you have to feel freedom to understand this way of living?

More like a big fat sister who eats everyone else's dinner and kicks their shins while mom's not looking. Slavic states were around a long time before Muscovy came into prominence, and I doubt very many Slavs look at Russia as "mom". I know Poles don't, but of course we're "ungrateful".
Kosovo is a separate story. Personally I don't like what's going on there, but accepting its independence seems more or less like facing up to reality - 90 percent of its population is Albanian, and they just don't want the Serbs to run their lives for them. Mitrovica and other ethnic Serb areas should have probably been hived off and given to Serbia - this would probably ease tensions somewhat. Maybe it's not too late for this, though I doubt there will be the political will to go ahead with something like that.

Giving a small portion of Kosovo to Serbia would not solve the problem. Kosovo is the historical, sometimes hysterical, motherland of Serbia. The problem is the two fold:

Abandonment of Kosovo by Serbs. During Tito's rule, many Serbs moved to other parts of Yugoslavia for economic gain, leaving the Albanians a majority who made more babies.

Maltreatment of the non-Serbs: Serbs tried the "labensraum" approach rather than dealing fairly with their minorities. Even their first cousins, the Montenegrins didn't want to be partners with them.

Absolute nonsense worthy of someone lacking even elementary knowledge of the region and it's historical context.

Yes,they had built a factory which made a lot of babies. They also imported some from Albania.

True. When you take a gun and enter KLA,you should have special treatment.

The laben happened to be their country actually.

Pity they did not give Albanians some Kalashnikovs and tanks to make NATO intervention unneccessary.

That is why the Montenegrins revolted and resorted to mountains for guerilla war.

Crnogorac: lacking even elementary knowledge of the region and it's historical context.

I understand the historical context and hatred of the last 900 years plus. A Serbo-Croation language instructor said the area was known for one thing: killing each other.

In the sixth century Slavs began to move into the Kosovo area. By the twelveth century, all of Kosovo was in Slavic hands. Then for about the next 200 years, a medieval Serbian state ruled by the powerful Nemanjic dynasty controlled the area. It was the cultural and administrative center of the Serbian people. However in 1389, the Ottoman Turks defeated the Serbs and Kosovo became part of the Ottoman Empire.

In the 1800 Serbs begin to abandon the Kosovo area, and Christian and Muslim Albanian moved into the area. In the very late 1800 Serbs began to move back in. WWI all hell broke loose with the Serbs trying to reclaim the area. Killings on both sides. In the period before WWII, Serbs increased their population, but did not become a majority. WWII the Albanians took control of most of Kosovo and moved some 100,000 Albanians into Kosovo. After WWII rebellion against Yugoslavian control. Thousands of Albanians killed.

After the late 60s, things settled down. Serbs started to move back to Serbia. Albanians immigrated into Kosovo, resulting in 75% Albanian population by 1971. By 1981 another 100,000 Serbs had left Kosovo for greener economic pastures in other parts of Yugoslavia. Albanians continued to copulate and continued to move into Kosovo.

Milosevic first visited Kosovo in April 1987 and began his mobilization of public opinion under the slogan "No Force can now Stop Serbia's Unification" leading to latest genocide in the area with which we are all familiar.

Europe is tired of genocide and border wars which is why the EU requires new members to agree to existing borders. No more wars. The world is the way it is. Forget what happened in 1389 or 1652 or 1912. Live in world of today. Everyone has been damaged and harmed by our idiotic and greedy ancestors. Let's try to live in peace.

Well, Russia is a most perfect place in the world. You, "western people", always live in constant horror of financial problems (taxations, fear to lose your work etc.).
Meanwhile, we never have such feelings. Sure, our state can demand all our property in times of great testing times, but in our day-to-day life it usually is ready to forgive us our little civilian tricks. For example, I never paid full sum of taxes or rather to say, I never had paid any taxes in my life and our state never reproached me. Are you envious? Come on! Moreover, we have totally zerro level of unemployment. And I bet that all Polish sanitary technicians will run in Siberia someday!

Of course! There is always room in the Uranium mines for willing or even unwilling hands. How's Tsar (Ras)Putin these days, Constantin? Think he's going to become the new party chairman?

Is that because you've never earned enough money to be taxed? Or reside in a mental institution?

I wish that it was so, but alas. Sure I would be a real billioner if my company were paid my salary in uranium bars.

Interestingly enough, ConstantineK, my niece just recently returned from a two year job in Siberia. She loved the Russian people she met, hated the weather. Very dreary.

The huge territories are why I believe Russia will want to join NATO within the next 30 years. When China has finished digesting Tibet, they'll reassert their claims to large portions of Siberia. Russia is not and will not be able to resist the strength of China and need help.

Poland should reconcile with Russia...I know Russia did a lot of shady things, BUT we should heal the past and team up with them. We could of had a oil pipeline pass through poland, but instead it ended up in the baltic sea where germany gets access to it. It completely bypassed us...i think poland should start to think for poland and NOT the US

Do you think it's fair for Poland to pay the compensation to the families in eastern Poland that "Stalin" removed from their homes, or should Russia be responsable?

Yeah, and then 10 years later you would be saying "damn! there goes the neighborhood!" ;)

Besides, would you send the settlers any oil for heat? Those winters in Siberia are brutal.
