I am sorry,my friends. The emblem is byzantine. One head of the Eagle points to the West(the bloody Franks) and one to the East(the usual Arabs and Turks). It was used in Constantinopol after 12th century,Russians took it after fall of Constantinupole in 1453.

Can someone tell me the story behind the two headed eagle? I know it is used alot in eastern europe, but what does it mean to slavs, or at least to poles?

And I don't get why the bear would be an undemocratic symbol. It's on the flag of California :/

That's a good question. The bear in Putin's party flag is not in an aggressive stance.

I told this for fun.Russian bear etc. However it is funny that the bear walks on the party flag.

Kaylyn:

Byzantine symbol originating from Romans. The meaning is rule of empire both to Asia(East) and Europe(West).
The Russian Tsars regarded themselves natural heirs of Byzantium and took the emblem along with the emperor title. It was to signify that they would one day capture Istanbul again and become the superpower in West and East restoring Byzantine Empire again.

Albanians have a comedy version on their flag.

I read that Albanians have a two headed eagle in their folklore, so they put it on their flag.

Wow do you think Russians still have this amibition?

In my opinion they regard themselves as empire too.The point is what does the head pointing to the East mean since they have no asian conquests.Anyway.

Yes,the panslavists would be very pleased. However Russians managed to get some very beneficial privileges regarding ship passing through Bosporus even in 1934 and after some Stalin talks in 1944-1945(if you know what I mean),so they have no reason to do sth that would change their position in the region now.

Polish eagel.

eagel

Russian/Gereek/Serbs ... eagel has origin in Byzantine cultre.

for Poles eagel posted by ConstantineK is defiantely not positive,

here is the nice place where you can check how Polish eagels were changing in the past

:) some do have :)

that is why Greeks and Serbs like them all this countries live in Byzantee tradition and democracy in Russia isn't so important for them ...

What is interesting Russians originaly were Muscovites. They have stolen name which should belong to Ukriainans (original Ru¶) it was to get the right to dominate them. So Ukraine should be called Russia ;) and Russians should be called Muscovites.

Finaly modern Russia is Russia (Muscovites are citizens of Moscow) and they tell Ukrianians that they should live in one country :) because Ukrainians are Russians ;)

and they show them ancient maps where Ukriaine is called Ru¶ and it is one country with Russians :)

Hmm... The Rûs were the Swedish "Vikings" who settled in Russia. They gave their name to the country... But they also founded Kiev (i'm pretty sure of it), in Ukraine.

Halogroup I
sss

why Serbs are the talest people in southern Europe ? ;)

we know in Poland that Rurykowicz (eng Rurik) dynasty on Ukraine was pure Scandinavian ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rurik

and if Russia comes from Scandinavian Vikings ... so Ukrainians are more Russian ;-)

as to your post I show how some data is presented in this part of europe :)

when we look on DNA it seems that Ukrainians are more Nordic than Germans ... :)

Hehe ;) Many of those Swedes stayed in Ukraine and mixed with other Ukrainians. Then some of today's Ukrainians have Nordic blood, yep, more than some Germans ^^
Among the Poles, "Nordic" blood can be found mostly in "noblemen" descendants ;)

Lukasz:
Rurykowicz dynasty

Rurik was one of those Rûs (Swedish) kings if i remember well... So i guess you're right. Poles are smart people ^^ Btw, if you look at IQ classification, Poles are as smart as Germans and Dutch, a little smarter that Swedes (even if the difference doesn't mean anything here)... It's now known that peoples from the northern parts of Europe have bigger brains than fellow Europeans (and rest of the world). So : are the Poles more "Nordic" than Nordic peoples themselves (if Polish average IQ is a little higher than theirs) ? ^^ Haha

Actually one taxi driver in Ukraine told me the theory that Ukrainians are the real Russians because Kiev Rus dynasty had its capital in Kiev. The first king who was christianized after delegation of byzantine priests arrives in Kiev,Sviatoslaw was king of the Rus and had Kiev as capital. He was baptized christian in order to marry the byzantine princess, daughter of byzantine emperor. After he became christian, massive baptism of Kiev inhabitants by byzantine priests occured in Dniepr.Soon majority of Rus had become orthodox. This king had allegedely 1000 women before he turned from slavic gods to christianity.
Anyway now Ukrainians call Russians moskoli(which is considered derrogatory term) and Russians call Ukrainians khochli(which is even more derrogatory). However even Ukrainians admit that Russians are considerably smarter and eastern Ukrainians as well as in Crimea feel Russians themselves(they even do not speak at all the ukrainian language).

Serbs are not just the tallest people in southern Europe.Very likely they are the tallest people in Europe.Dinarik Serbs are for sure and I am convinced that if a research is carried out,the whole population will gain the first place.(very unlikely that anyone will commit this research for obvious reasons).
Now the Dutsch have the first place, however it is done by data concerning the younger generations.Let's see what will be the result if they use the same method in Serbia or in Czech Republic.

I have seen nice article of Jewish scientist. He said that persecuted nations are smarter and smarter.

Jew had to be inteligent to survive and strong enought to be Jew (not asimilate)

I thnik that Russians ... Germans ... Hitler .... Stalin ... 200 years of prosecutions have made Polish people stronger and smarter as well ...

^ ^

we will see in nearest future if my statement is true and if we are so smart ;-)

Look, only Ashkenazi Jews have an IQ of 105(which is even lower than german IQ).The rest of Jews(african, arabic) have considerably lower IQ (in the range of 92-95).The result was totally not expected and the Jews carry a lot of objections and try to get a research to get better results for themselves.

Hehe, why not, interesting theory ;)

The way of life, food, climate, had made peoples evolved differently. Being persecuted is a "way of life" ;P Along with good food and hard climate, today's Poles are among the smartest people on the Earth ^^ Hey people, come and invade us...

Back to the Rûs, i can "prove" that they were Swedish : today, Sweden in Finnish is Ruotsi and in Estonian is Rootsi, close to Rus, Russia, right ? ;)

we all know that it is true ... :)

the problem is that eastern europe is poor it is reasult of 20 century ... the fact is that eastern Germans were the strongest in Germany before WWII. Now they are poorer and western Germans don't respect them ...

the same is with Poland ;) I hope that in new enviroment we will be able to show our value :)

Personaly I have enought of reading posters like Southern sugesting some things.

Like Czechs are not Slavic people because they are richer than "we" Greeks just 20 years after communism ( btw Poland developed more in per cent (GDP) than Czechs after '89, they had better base to start (GDP) and were less robbed by germans during WWII and Russians during communism ;) ) or that pro Russian part of Ukraine is smarter because they are more pro Russian like Greeks :)

I think we should end our development based on this strategy :)

The contrary.I presented recent research of czech scientists that proves the slavic origin of Czechs beyond doubt.

Actually GDP per capita in Czech stands at 20000$ now and in Greece at 28000$.

Lukasz:

The Ukrainians regard Russians as smarter(on average).Actually IQ of Ukrainians is 93 and of Russians stands at 96.Not a statistically insignificant difference.Ukrainians claim that Russians are smarter because they live mostly in big cities while most ukrainian population lives in rural areas.
