Hello everybody

I might get an opportunity to work in Krakow at a company in need of Hungarian and Romanian language.( I speak both)
I would like to ask for your suggestion regarding the salary. They want to offer me 2200 PLN. I believe it is a small salary.
I also have to relocate.
What would you say ?

They want to offer me 2200 PLN.

Email them asking if they pay monthly or weekly and if they do pay monthly, whether the monthly salary is 4 or 4.3 times the weekly wage which they have told you about.

Minimum should be 5000 or 6000 pln.

That is what an experienced specialist doctor makes in big Polish cities.

For example where I live, in Bialystok, 5500 pln/month is for an experienced lekarz who is doktor habilitowany.
Specialist and Dr n. med. is approx 4000 pln/month.

However, many doctors also have a private clinic.

In Poland? You could live like a king for that. Did you mean zl? That's still very good. Unless they offered free accomodation, I wouldn't get out of bed for 2200 zl.

5500PLN seems to be ok until they strip you of this and that.

so then he is left with 2200! I don't think 5000 to 6000 is outrageous. Perhaps this is just Warsaw, but I don't think so. He needs to speak Hungarian and Romanian.

Languages are almost worthless skills. Companies do not want to pay for it and I suspect it would pay less than the national average which is 3500pln. Teaching English to private clients seems to be quite lucrative in Poland. However, to become a professional translator it took my friend 15 years, 20 languages to earn a average wage (£27K) in the UK (its way below a London average wage though). He has no job security, they replace a group of 5 Asian specialists within a day of sacking them.

So 2200 maybe poor, but unless you have other skills I doubt you could expect much more.

The job requires him to speak both languages. I would say he is a specialist in his field.

Maybe it is just Warsaw, but, there is no way a foreigner could live on 2200. What about rent? That would soak up 80%.
I think the company is low balling him.

If you are jobless, if you don't have a better offer than 2200 PLN, doesn't matter you are a Pole or another citizen, 2200 PLN isn't so bad money.

It's probably the entry level job and the uniq language skills are the main requirement... 2200 is little, he should demand more but realistically 2500-2600 net is max. They will laugh him out If he says he wants 5-6k.

If you are skilled in languages (and job requires you to speak in even more than one international language), 2,200 PLN is really unfair.
We don't have any openings for Hungarian and Romanian at this moment, but can happen that positions can come up soon. If you want to send us an open application, for helpdesk analyst position in Krakow, the salary might reach 4,400 PLN. If (and when) sending your mail, please attach only DOC or PDF formats for CV. Greetings.

Not in Warsaw. An electrician with basic qualifications working on the new stadium gets over 4k with overtime and 3k without..

Skilled manual workers such as plumbers make good money in big cities such as Warsaw and Krakow ,they definitely make more money in average than non manual workers ( exept for the Polish Notaries who are real bandits)....

Saw today in my local Biedronka (not a company famous for high salaries :) ) that they hire people for 2150 PLN a month. Agreeably that is for backbreaking thankless work - but that means that the OP is offered a ridiculous wage. I do not think the cost of living in Kraków is much lower as in Warsaw.
And these posting hare hanging there very regularly, meaning they 1. Cannot find people for that salary or 2. People quit very fast. I guess it is a combination of the two.

Did they really write the salary in the advertisment?

There are people in Krakow earning 1000pln a month. My brother in law is earning 1500/month driving quarry equipment. Maybe 5-6000 is normal in Warsaw, but the head of a university department only earns 7K in Krakow.

I'm sorry, but language translators with no other skills are not highly paid.

Probably a fair assessment

helpdesk analyst position in Krakow, the salary might reach 4,400 PLN.

Obviously not a a translating position, that should make for interesting support calls..

Knowing languages isn't a plus anymore in getting more salary. There is google translation now that lowers values of people knowing extra languages. It may not be professional translator, but, for majority of people who need some simple communications, it is enough. Also, communications today are less verbal, more written communications.

Yes they actually did. It was hanging on the message board near the entrance.

despite their reputation, Biedronka are now actually one of the top payers in Polish retail. Avg for a store asst in the sector is about 1.700 gross and a bit more in Warsaw.

For your job then if you dont have any skills or experience other than your language then I think about 2500- 3000 is what you could get. If you do have some other marketable skills then more like 4k depending on what it is.

Languages actually do make a difference. Especially the "rare" combinations. Try to find someone who speaks Dutch-English-French-German.
I wish you luck :)

I think you will find a lot of people from say Luxembourg who will fit quite nicely, their language is a mixture of French and German and Dutch is pretty similar to German (plus the proximity should help). And of course they will speak English. I'd suspect you will find a lot of Dutchmen who can speak French and German on top of their native Dutch/English. Language graduates usually do two languages, of which French and German are a popular pair.

None the less, you will still find it nearly impossible to get a well paid job purely on being multi lingual.

As for Luxembourg, I agree with you for the French/German/English part. Question is how many of them (by the way a very agreeable and friendly country) live in Poland? Dutchmen speaking French? I still have to meet them.
The thing is, are they in Poland? I know quite a few HR people here in Warsaw and they tell me that the combination Polish/Dutch/French/German/English is very rare here.
I agree with you though that getting a well paid job only on being multilingual is impossible. But combined with let us say logistics that is a different picture.
