Hello everyone. I am a 29 year old male looking for a job in Torun. Anything would be fine as I am a quick learner and always looking for new experiences and learning new skills. In the States I am a fireman and Paramedic but sadly I cannot do that in Poland since I don't speak Polish and am not a citizen. I do have a work visa. Teaching English would probably be the easiest and most common so if anyone can tell me of good schools and contact information that would be great. Any advice or direction would be appreciated.
David

Hi.
There are really many private English schools in Toruń. Later I will try to post some links to them. You can also ask if there is any vacancy in College of English(my new school:))-will also give you e-mail later so you can ask for some info. Sorry for short replay now but have to go for classes...

I have a friend who lives in Torun, he told me that the market for natives is very competitive. So i would say, print your CV and get round all the schools ASAP!

Tech English

Poles love to learn languages all the time, you can earn 100zl Net per 45min lesson

All foreigners do this, you will earn more than in a common job or more than a doctor

Make the students go to your place so you won't spend time in moving

In the mornings that you'd have free you may teach "Business English" in the companies, just count 4 hr min per week at 100zl/hr...

I know a British cardiologist in Warsaw who decides to teach because is less stress and ears more

Another guy from Australia is specifying only in preparing people for the interviews in English.

And a girl from Canada is teaching kids music but everything in English, rich families loves this and pay really well.

By the way, don't tech in schools since they pay 15~20 Zl per 60min lesson as to any other Polish teacher, remember you are unique, use it,profit from the circumstances and more over ,give to Poland some of what you have receive.

We all love Poland not because of the weather or the money, but because of the healthy way of living mentally and physically, people is clean and girls are just lovely, so give in exchange yor time and tell them all your tips to earn money abroad

Good luck and the best wishes in your time in Poland

That's not going to happen in Torun. And 100 net/hour? In what land?

(yes, there are cases where people have made this kind of money, but only in Warsaw and only with being very-well connected).

Not really. 120zl per 60 minutes (which nets to 100zl per hour) is pretty much the going rate for business English. The trick is getting into companies in place of schools.

Warsaw prices have gone so high? Bloody hell...the going rate here is between 60-80zl (charged by the school) - and companies, if they take someone privately rather than through a school are very unwilling to go higher than 70zl an hour.

Here in Warsaw it's about 90zl per 45 minutes when charged by schools. Individual teachers can charge that much too, I do (not that these days I teach more than two hours a week, if that).

100zl is only what, about 22 pounds an hour? If he was any good, he'd be earning far more than that in his trade. And I certainly wouldn't call teaching "less stressful".

I suspect there are probably other good reasons why he's not practicing.

Wow. All of that seems absurd. When I was living in Poznan I taught some students one on one at my flat or in a cafe. It was mostly conversational and not structured for 20 an hour. I guess I need to find a business to teach for or maybe even change my plans to move to Warsaw if they pay 100zl an hour. That is great money for Poland, hell, 30 dollars an hour is good money for any country.
What about any other jobs. I would like to learn a skill like iron working, wood working, or something like that, even if it pays less than teaching English. Any ideas?

Strangely enough, locally the competition has got out of hand (around Bielsko). I heard of one school being undercut by another offering business English for 25zl p/h in company! It's absolutely crazy!

Not really, there have always been 'schools' who offer 'lessons' for next to nothing and pay their 'teachers' three fifths of bugger all. However, most companies have now realised that you most certainly do get what you pay for when it comes to English lessons.

Bloody hell, the old saying "pay peanuts, get monkeys" would seem to be appropriate!

(has Bradbury moved there?)

Consultant physicians tend to be paid "per session" rather than per hour, and they tend to work more hours than they appear to do. The "spending all day on the golf course" myth is just that - a myth. Taking a basic starting salary of £75K a year, they could appear to be on as little as £25 an hour. I've earned more than £25 an hour at times in the past, and I'm not even a consultant physician :)

Go and watch an emergency splenectomy some time, then tell me that teaching is as stressful as surgery!

First - congratulations!
Toruń is a lovely town.
Try to contact this guy. He may know something useful to you.

Or contact them. They are really know a lot about local job market for the foreigners. (You just have to be nice. In a Polish way. I hope you understand what I mean?)

It would be a good idea to talk with the local University (Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika).
As you do not speak any Polish it would be a good idea to hire an interpreter.

If you know any other language than the American (sorry for my French) it would be a nice idea to try interpreting/translating job.

And why not try at local job-centre? here is the link

It would seem so, but seriously in these strange economic times, people do strange things! When the contract was lost we talked extensively but couldn't compete in terms of cost!

I hear male lap dancing is becoming popular amongst the nouveau riche Polish business women, you might get lucky in picking up a sugar mommy at the same time..

Just a thought..

Perfect. I will do the lap dancing. Good money and touching any women that pays with no sort of standards or being able to choose is exactly what I am looking for.

It just comes to my mind - You can also exploit a strong anti-war and anti-American sentiments in Poland.
You may be able to earn a serious money by offering kind of a "Spit on the bloody yankee!" road-show.
All you need is a cowboy hat, American flag, and a lot of paper towels. :-)

Hi !
I'm a french and finnish girl and I want to know what kind of work I can find in Torun ? (I'm going there next year)
I study English, Spanish, and Finnish at the university in France.

Do you think I can work with those skills ?

And are their any spanish resources ? because when I visited quickly the center of torun I could find only English organizations.

It is possible to earn more than 100PLN outside the capital in companies. Remember, you have to get there and get back, so one hour becomes two if that's all they offer you. You might also find that students have a high level of English and often ask extremely detailed questions about the language. Are you sure you can answer them with authority? You can, of course, always find a job with a cowboy outfit school. They often employ backpackers instead of professional career teachers but don't expect much money. Oh, and don't believe a single word of what kastanedowski said.

Did you find anything? If not let me know. I'm American as well and lived here for about 7 years and taught in a bunch of different schools. Teaching isn't as easy as we think it is. I'm back in Torun now temporarily, but could always try and help you out if you're still looking:)
