Hi Laura

about 30 km from Gorzów is a city of Kostrzyñ where headquarters of BIIIIG company called Geronimo Martins who run Biedronka network are to be found - you can try your luck with them - maybe your language skills can help (Geronimo Martins are Portuguese originally)

as for learning Polish I don't think you can find Polish classes in Gorzów - it is not that big an academic center - in Frankfurt am Oder there is a university called Viadrina who should have Polish classes though most probably in German - but check it out on their websites (Frankfurt am Oder is on the Polish-German border about 50 km from Gorzów - check it with Google maps or similar)

Polish classes for foreigners in English may perhaps be found in Szczecin or Poznañ which are over 100km from Gorzów

good luck
and take care

Hi

I suppose I am the resident expert on Gorzow wlkp... I lived there for 2 years. I had Polish lessons 1-2-1 at the school i was working at called "New England" on Pomorska 30, opposite intermarche.
I know that there is an Irish girl working there now who seems very nice :)
As for jobs there... Hmmm... Im not sure, but i know there are factories around Gorzow, at least one of which employs a large amoung of Thai people and I doubt that they speak Polish.

The problem for you and your friend is going to be language because Gorzow doesn't have a lot of English speaking people living there, i guess because it is not a University city, it has one small college for 18+ students (PWSZ) and lots of language schools, so maybe try there??

Alternatively, you might just have to try your luck walking around and looking in shop windows, or asking people.

How come you're there anyway, if you don't mind me asking?? :)

Hello, pudddddin,

Thank You for Your replay. Me and my friend figured out very quickly that there isn't many English speaking ppl in Gorzow. Therefore, I decided to learn Polish course. After You know Polsih language it will be easyer to make contacts, find job and even such a simple things like doing weekly shopping in Tesco or paying monthly bills ... it will make life here easyer . :-) I agree with You about Irish ppl- they have very nice personalitys.
How come I,m in Poland? My friend received an good offer to work in Poland. For a wile was very hard to make decision, but then - why not to take this opportunity? I think it's great experience and You are on the middle of Europe. :-) It's great opportunity - I think!

Thank You and all the best! :-)

Hi Laura,

I lived in Gorzow for quite a while. Job wise I wouldn't think there is much around. Without speaking Polish you will struggle and even if you do find something the wages are going to be pretty low.

I'm good friends with the owner of a private nursery, he's often looking for fluent English speakers to help out teaching the kids (age 3-6) English. He would help with the lessons so its not too important for you to speak Polish.

PM me your email and I'll send over his contact info.

I hope you have avoided the Stilon fighters from Gorzow. They wouldn't even allow the filming of a documentary by Ross Kemp. Goodness knows why. One of the hooligans threatened to smash the camera, what a loser!

Hey Laura

Best bet to start out is find a Uni or college student (there's a lot of them about) and offer English conversation in exchange for Polish. It's fine for when you're starting out.

I too touched down in GWLKP in 1993, stayed 5 years. Still have strong contacts via in-laws, I am regularly there now I'm back in PL and living in Poznan! Can't comment on job situation, you could try Macpherson School of English down by the PKP station (tell Renata Alex says hi :-> ) which was my HQ back then.

Don't worry about the Stilon hools. Mummy's boys, to a man. A different story when they're out in packs but they're not looking to beat up foreigners, just each other and the local milicja.

In short I think you'll find the lack of English speakers is the best environment and stimulus you'll need.

All the best, A
