Hey all,

I'm an MA graduate in literature and gender studies, looking for work in Poland. I'm living in Poznań now, so freelance work here would be most welcome; but I'm willing to relocate should an opportunity arise.

I'm a native speaker of English and Malay, have excellent proofreading skills, and some experience with copywriting.

Also willing to do odd jobs, babysit, etc.

Any offers, pointers or advice would be most welcome! I'm Malaysian, 26 years old, previously studied and lived in Hungary and the United States.

YX

In the market place you will be competing with British and American native speakers who are all searching for similar work. Best thing is to advertise - print some leaflets and give them out to people, to businesses to anybody - but remember, 'it's tough out there'.

Complete the CELTA and start looking for work as an ESL teacher. I believe the next CELTA course is offered in january - so if you took it you'd be ready to teach in the beginning of feburary. Unfortunately that is not the best time of the year to look for work.

babysit

Polish parents want polish speaking babysitters so you can forget about this.

Especially as she's not a native speaker either, nor does she speak Polish well enough. There's also the work permit issue. But - one sensible option could be to teach the Asian community here on a freelance basis.

I wish I could give some sensible advice, but the Poznan job market is rammed full of such graduates and employers can more or less pick and choose at the minute. My suggestion would be to chase down the Easyjet/Allegro help centres - they're located near Rondo Kapionera, though I don't have more details. Certainly, Easyjet is forever looking for near-native English speakers there - though it's hard work!

Hmm, yes I've tried leafleting around the universities with not much luck so far. Is there somewhere in Poznań I could do the CELTA? Or is the closest at IH Wroc³aw?

:p

But thanks for the Easyjet/Allegro suggestion, I'll definitely look that up.

IH Wroclaw is the closest place, yes. Also in Warsaw and Berlin, I suppose?

The problem is the work permit. What passport(s) do you hold?

Poznan just isn't a kind place for foreigners looking to start their career, I'm afraid :(

Yeah, I've sort of figured that out. =/ Thing is, I'm only going to be here for under a year, and plan to relocate in the fall.

I have a malaysian passport, and actually I already managed to obtain a work permit (for a part-time, five-hours-a-week sort of thing). But I'm not sure if this permit allows me to legally engage in other work -- any idea? I also went by the call center today, and they told me to send in my CV; perhaps something will work out there.

That's interesting - what did you get the work permit for? I'm very surprised you got it for such a small amount - unless the job actually required speaking Malay?

And no, sorry - you need a fresh work permit for every job.

I hope so :) I'll let you know if I hear of anything else similar. It's also worth pestering the language schools straight after Christmas - there are always native teachers that quit after Christmas. In particular, there's a total lack of female teachers in Poznan.

Give me a shout after Christmas - I'm happy to meet up with you and give you some ideas about what might work. I know several employers looking for staff at the minute, but it's the same old problem - Polish is needed :(

Good to know--about the work permit. I suppose that won't be a problem at the call center though, if they hire me, as they seem used to hiring lots of foreigners.

It would be great to meet up post-Christmas, thanks for the offer. =) I'll send a message.

Do you think you could name a few of the Callan schools for me? I figure if I'm going to pester I should give those a shot first--as I clearly lack any formal teaching qualifications.
