Hello I am Harrison from Colombia. I am moving to Poznan for good this Christmas, so I am looking for a job where I can use both my written and oral language skills. I have been in Poland before for a full year and have learned a lot about the culture. For years I have worked as a english/spanish translator as well as an english teacher and spanish teacher for foreigners. During my full year student exchange experience in Poland I worked for a polish company in marketing research for 6 months and then I joined a social project as a volunteer for three months to spread multiculturalism, cultural understanding and social entrepreneurship among children and teenagers of primary and secondary schools from Poznan and towns around the Wielkopolska province. I also had spanish lessosn with students and professionals fulfilling his learning expectation followed by a dynamic atmosphere. I have a very basic polish for now, but I am putting all my enthusiasm to learn it. I am a highly-motivated person at teaching my language and culture characterized by his charisma. Feel free to contact me at: hacuro84@gmail.com

Out of interest, how did you manage to secure a work visa if you don't have employment here?

Out of question! make your question more clear ;) you start asking with past tense and then close the question with present tense :O so I am confused and cant give you a proper answer!

Well, if you want to teach people a foreign language, you better get used to the way that people will mix tenses freely in English - especially if you intend to instruct people in English!

As I said - how did you get the visa without having a work permit?

Alright, I got it. At first I thought you were picking on me :P Well the true is: I dont have a working visa now. When I was in Poland I had a student visa as I was on a student exchange, and I also had some private lessons, this doesnt require a contract of course. I am moving to Poland this Christmas with my fiancee which is Polish :) I am trying to find a job who can provide me with a contract, it would be great to get a full time job there, if possible :) Do you have any ideas or know about anybody who could hire me? Thanks for your comments and I apologize if I was very rude with my previous reply, as I said I misunderstood you ;)

Regards

Oh no I don't think you did misunderstand/misunderstood him. He's a very rude and ignorant man and he will try to find an argument with you. It's his style. Better to ignore him completely.

It's going to be difficult, very difficult to be honest. I know some people who were in a similar situation to you, and really - the best way in is to get married.

The problem is that many employers are reluctant to go through with the work permit process, because it's quite a tedious procedure - and unfortunately for you, Poland is becoming more and more popular with Spanish speakers - meaning that there'll be less demand for you.

In Poznań at least - all the foreigners working for companies (not schools) have landed the job through being sent from another country. That might be one way in?

I dont quite agree on this ;) I know it is tedious to get a contract, as it was for my polish fiancee in Colombia, though she got it :)) but someone willing to hire a native spanish speaker with a lot of skills as me would do it. So I have a lot of chances, and I have friends from Latin America already working there as spanish teacher and salsa instructors :) Yes Spanish is becoming very popular and a very profitable business, and I love teaching people :) that's why I want to work on this field. Less demand for me? I dont think so, it is the boom now. Spanish has become the 5th most popular language to learn in Poland, according to the website of the Cervantes Institute in Warsaw an Authority is Spanish language, Spanish represents 15% of Spain's GDP: check this: http://www.elcastellano.org/ns/edicion/2009/febrero/castellano.html just to let you know how much money they make to spread our language in the world ;) and fortunately for me this language has shown the biggest increase in the last few years in Poland and also in the world, if you read the statistics and of course will keep growing, which also means the demand for native spanish teacher for intermediate and higher levels will keep booming :) Se habla espanol, si senor ;)

Not all of them, see I have many examples of people (foreigners from Non-european countries) who have got their jobs being there in Poland, just you have to have the right skills, I have a colombian friend working in Poznan legally as a software developer ;)

And btw I will get married when it is the right time to do it :P I might invite you to the wedding? :P

Anyways your advice and good wills to help will always be welcome delphiandomine

Take care

Actually - I can tell you that in Poznan, Spanish is seen as a "fun" language - something to learn when you get bored with English. It's not taken seriously - and there is little to no demand for Spanish at the corporate level. German is entrenched as the 3rd language among those with money, who need it professionally. As I said - you're going to find it very difficult to find an employer willing to go to the hassle of getting a work permit for someone who is wanted, at most, 10 hours a week.

Bear in mind that these statistics are not showing the reality - that many people learn elementary Spanish for fun, but few are interested in becoming fluent in the language. You can see this reflected in the salaries here - native English teachers can take home 50-60PLN an hour, but Spanish teachers are getting 25-30PLN/hour at most - with irregular work. Also - bear in mind that quite a few young Spanish people are coming to Poland - you have to bring something that they don't have, yet they have the right to work and you don't.

Statistics showing that Spanish is the 5th most popular language to learn shows you how much of a minority language it is - it's just not needed by the vast majority of language learners.

Salsa instructors? You're not going to get a work permit for that.

Oh yes, it's not so difficult once you're in-country. But - for instance, to hire you, every school must have a work permit - even if it's just two hours a week. The vast majority of schools are unlikely to offer you full time work, so you'd need to piece together a timetable - and then you have to compete against Spanish nationals who don't need work permits. The Spanish have well and truly discovered Polish girls - I know at least three Spanish natives here who tried to find work and failed. I also know a Columbian guy who ended up in Krakow because Poznan had nothing to offer him - the work permit was almost universally the sticking point.

About the best chance is a job through a university - but they will want at least a BA in Spanish with a teaching qualification.

Of course, the other smart way is to become a student here at one of the private educational establishments and then work from there - but again, you have the same problem - work permit? Non-EU passport? Problem, problem...The reason that people found work as (for instance) developers is that there's a lack of those skills in Poland. But there's plenty of Spanish speakers here, both Polish and native - in fact, the supply outstrips demand.

What qualifications do you have for teaching? If you have some, I might be able to help you make some contacts at the universities.

You know, I actually do talk to people in the real world - and it isn't common knowledge that a work permit is specific for one job with one employer. Many people seem to think that once you have a work permit, you can work anywhere.

If German is entranched as the 3rd language, and obviously English is the 1st language, which one is ranked as the second?

Ah, idiotic way of phrasing it.

English is the 2nd language that most people learn, German possibly 3rd. Sometimes it's switched round, but those two are the languages of business here.

Spanish (like French) is just for fun.

Aren't fun times and entertainment part of human beings or poles breathing spaces? Entertainment is a big industry, same as fun things, we all need them :) There is Spanish for business for instance DELE (a spanish test contain some Business Spanish) and it has been promoted in Poland with a lot of success, many Spanish companies have established in Poland to do business there, there is actually a lot of international business going on between Spain and Poland since finally Poland joined the EU :) Many poles want to learn Spanish, coz they want to travel to Latin America, Spain (have fun), simply add the language to their knowlegde or do business with it, btw it's been really hot these days here in my city Santa Marta(Colombia), sometimes 42'C :O I know you love this weather ;) That's why some poles would like to come here, many people say it is beautiful, isnt this a good reason to choose studying spanish? you can come to very exotic places, unfortunately not many people here will speak ingles and/or polish, so you need some basic spanish or some spanish :) I want the Spanish classes as I said because I love teaching people, and it will also be an extra thing in my life (dont take it wrong, even the extra things I do them giving my all) apart from my plans to set up a business with my fiancee ;)

delphiandomine:

For me it is ok, as long as I am doing something I like and people are happy with my job :) I will not go cheap, coz I know my skills and experience in teaching languages as freelance :)
I know how much money I can take home, and also if that's what I'd get paid, I have to start from something, I will crush, there will be ups and downs, I know that. Been there done that! :) I will do it, people get to know me and I might be considered to be paid more, if my job is outstanding, as I like it to be.

delphiandomine:

Oh man if it is 5th now, imagene how it would be in few years, I will be setting my own school :D Have you heard about business oportunities? :) Can you show me the real statistics except from the Spanish Authorities as the Institute Cervantes in Warsaw?

Salsa Instructor is not what I wanna be, though I know how to do it and can teach it too :) Yes you can be hired, dont be stubborn man, I have a friend from Colombia with a contract in a Dance School :)

And well Poznan is where I wanna be, come and visit me in the future, I can also teach you salasa for free, so you rock the latin pubs :D

Competition with Spanish Nationals? No the competition is with myself ;) I am the one who put limits in my life, though I like competition to be honest and know how to prove I am the best they can take :P Sounds a little be like "I am the best", but I have a possitive attitude in life, (not the pesimist) and want to keep it that way. It works for me!

delphiandomine:

It'd be great if a Uni would hire me, I know it's not easy, even in Colombia for a foreigner it is a hassle, I have a BA in International Business and a Postgraduate in Quality Management, it may not be enough for a Uni, though ;) But my experience is based on a freelance work for over 5 years in teaching english and spanish, my most recent job I was teaching spanish to foreigners, beacause of my english and teaching skills, etc.

Ok man I'll catch up later... Es hora de playa aqui :)

Papa!
