Hello Marx,

I'm sorry to hear that you have trouble finding a job that would suit your education
and provide a decent salary but I'm afraid that you're facing the same problem as
many millions of young people in our country at the moment.

You live in a country from which roughly 3.5 million people have emmigrated
in the last 5 years (since Poland joined the EU in 2004) in search of a decent job
and in which we have about 1.4 million unemployed who are not entitled to receive
the dole (about 80% of all unemployed).

I wish you and your family all the best and I don't want to sound like an arsehole,
but maybe (just maybe) choosing Poland as the European country you want to
settle in wasn't the most fortunate idea.

Nonetheless, I hope you'll find a good job and that you won't have to emmigrate
like millions of my compatriots did.

Best regards,
Torq

P.S. By the way, there's no malice intended in my question - I'm just curious:
how on Earth did you manage to pass all the exams during your studies at Akademia
Morska if you "understand polish but cant speak back"?

Hello Marx and welcome to the forums.

As far as I am aware there are no agencies for jobs at sea, you have to apply to the companies directy. For starters you could try -

Polish Baltic Shipping Co.
78-100 Kołobrzeg, ul. Portowa 41
tel. +48 94 35 52 102, 35 52 103
fax +48 94 35 52 208
e-mail: info@polferries.pl
www.polferries.pl

..and dont worry about Espana - we all know he loves black seamen.

You will be lucky if you can get a job at sea close to home, you could go down to the harbour and see which companies ship out of Trojmiasto - just ask around.

Looking further afield, have you thought about the Oil industry ?
You would be looking to start out as a Roughneck, hard work but its got prospects. The only problem is you would need your safety certificates and would need to be prepared to travel globally Angola, Korea, Mexico etc

All joking aside, theres good jobs going in Iraq - alright for the short term.

Send a CV off to Oil Careers Soul Resources

Nothing to lose.

One: Suggestion that this guy is discriminated as a foreigner is unfair.
Two: Being a seaman involve journeys around the world. What difference if company who own the ship is based in Gdańsk, London or N.Y.?
Three: If your navigation abilities are as flawless as your "english"...

Conclusion: Troll

Really? I thought that non-EU foreigners required work permits in Poland and so are automatically and officially discriminated against. Thank you for pointing out the error of my ways.

Well for one thing, the job interview would probably be in a different place.

The adjective which comes from the noun 'navigation' is 'navigational'. As somebody who claims to be a language professional, you may wish to put your own house in order before commenting on the skills of other people (and by the way, the famous British plane was the "Spitfire", not the "spitfire).

I don't claim my English is "flawless". Thank you for your remarks.
And yes - I am a "professional" but English is unfortunately is not my field.

Have you tried Maersk? They are a major company and likely have some work going. There is a lot of work in Nigeria too, I've heard. My friend does ROV work there sometimes. His brother is a captain now. They are twins. I could ask them.

He said to try Clyde Marine. They are based in Scotland but can send you to many parts of the world. Glasgow has a really good nautical college.

Try the companies that do work in Nigeria. I think he started out with Sonsub and they send many people to Lagos and other cities.

Good luck with those. Seeing as you are so close to Scandinavia up there in Gdynia, try some of their companies. Norway and Sweden have a few. It'd only need a ferry trip across the Baltic.
k98_man  Dec 19, 09, 13:52    #25
No idea how to help, but good luck.

Learning Polish would be of some use for more than the job though, I suppose.

I could have assisted you when I was in Poland. Now, except you want to work in the UK or Canada, I would be able to assist you. I currently consult for NeoContract UK; a Human Resources/Overseas job placement company. Maybe you take a look at Neocontract(com)

What about sending your cv and resumé to international shipping companies in Poland such as Maersk ( Danish) as Seanus says and Yes Nigeria and especially Lagos, you would make a fortune there but it is also one of the most expensive place in the world i heard.

Good luck Marxebare I am sure youll find something
