Krakow Restaurant Recommendations

OK, we (the 4 of us) are landing in Krakow around 1:00 in the afternoon and leaving for our tour at 9:00 AM the following morning. We have time for lunch, dinner and breakfast, and maybe a drink or two in the evening before we crash after a long day of traveling from the US. It's Wednesday - where do you recommend we go, and why? Note that we're all hoping to enjoy delicious local dishes, reasonably priced - preferably close to the central area of the city - and to see some of this lovely city and its people before the day ends. My father speaks some Polish, but the rest of us don't.
I really appreciate your sincere input on this - it may be the only trip to Poland my father ever makes (he's 83, but in great shape).

Polskie Jadło or Babcia would be my recommendations for good Polish Food.
Polskie Jadło has a place on the market square. For 200pln you can order a large platter for 4 people, with a good selection of everything Polish. From starters, main and dessert. Everything you could want to try is on it;)

Polskie Jadlo is a really nice one. Good tip! It's a chain with at least two in Krakow. But my favourite one is Pod Aniolami. They have great tradicional polish food there and the atmosphere is also something beautiful. It is a old cellar and you really have impression you are back in time. You can have a look in its website podaniolami.pl for the menu. Enjoy!! I`m jealous already :)

I'd avoid Chlopskie Jadlo (and offshoot Polskie Jadlo) as the quality is pretty poor. Nostalgia on ul. Karmelicka is a good mid range option, but if you're looking for the best Polish food try Pod Aniolami or Wierzynek (Pod Aniolami is the less formal option of the two).

That's two for Pod Aniolami - sounds like the place to go. Thanks!
I was provided with a phone number for a good cab driver by another PF member - would anyone in Krakow be willing to call him for me, and make arrangements with him to pick up my party at the airport when we arrive on the 16th? That would be a HUGE benefit and I'd REALLY appreciate it. I want my Dad to feel secure and confident immediately, and having a friendly and competent cab driver there to greet us would be a phenomenal start.

If you're passing by, I totally recommend CK Browar (www ckbrowar krakow pl) - it's half restaurant and half minibrewery. Near the centre and not too pricey :)

My personal recommendation is Chlopskie Jadlo - always, always excellent food, home made, ideal place to go if you wish to taste Polish cousine. every time I bring my English friends there they love the place.

here is nicely done piece on restaurants in Krakow from newspaper. I could not copy everything as they have it in pdf only, the rest is on discoverpl.com , third cover with EURO on it.

One recommendation is to go to Morskie Oko (pl. Szczepański 8) which specialises in amazing traditional mountain Polish food. With its long wooden tables and benches, it attracts a more rowdy crowd, and the live mountain music encourages the fl ow of beer. Get your stomach ready for some serious mountain-style alcohol consumption with the fantastic placek (potato pancake) topped with spicy meat sauce, herring in brine and top it all off with Polish apple pie (szarlotka).

Come on Wiezynek is really over rated .The place is extremely beautiful and the service excellent but the food most unremarkable for the price.
Chimera is much better in my opinion.

up until a month ago I would have agreed with you, but then I went to eat there again and found that things have changed. I thought it was worth every penny.

Thanks again, everyone, for all of your hints, tips and advice. Our trip was incredible - we loved every minute of it. With all of your excellent recommendations, it was easy to just hop into the one that we came across when it was time for dinner - Chopskie Jadlo it was. Expensive, but very tasty. So was the carriage ride through Krakow afterward, as a matter of fact. What a great city!
