Hi. I just signed up for this site. I am travelling to Szczecin for about 2 - 3 days in May, 2007 and was wondering if someone could tell me about this city. I am from the US. I have already been to Warsaw and Krakow but never Szczecin. What type of restaurants, nightlife, etc.?

I would also like to meet and spend time with someone who could help me to learn some beginning Polish words and phrases. email: kranzler@fpunet.com

Look forward to hearing from you.

Well,
I liked Szczecin, it's a little quiet in comparison to Berlin, but it is a nice city. Not too big, just perfect. There are quite a lot of German and scandinavian tourist there, so you wouldn't feel out of place. Just the opposite. It has quite a lot of pubs but they are scattered all over the city. The hang out for foreigners is Radisson Hotel - there is a nice restaurant/club on the top floor with the view of the city.
Another hot spot is Passsagge Boguslawa with a lot of pubs/coffee shops, some art galeries-check teh tea house called "Fanaberia" - it's run by my friend.
You should also go to Plac Grundwaldzki and stand in the middle of it, turn around and see all the 8 streets going into the city. It's my favourite view and you can really admire the "star" city planning which is also typical for Paris.
The castle and the Old Town which is new (renowated town) is also worth seeing. Take a nice stroll along the Odra (Oder) river from where could admire the view and the famous Szczecin shipyard.
The passage is called Waly Chrobrego and is elevated, so you can sip your beer looking at the river in one of the 2 nice pubs which are situated at the beginning and and end of the alley, depending on which direction you would be coming from.
Szczecin has a fair amount of trees, so if you are going in May, pay attention to blooming magnolia trees at this time of the year.
Another interesting spot is the main train station, but only because the enterance to the bunkers which were built during the war. The tour last about 2 hours and apperantly it's quite interesting if one has interest in it.

Thanks for a great description. I would like to see some of the tourist areas. I also like places where there are no tourists. Love to try the local food in a restaurant where everyone there is Polish. Can't wait! I just loved Poland last year when I went to Warsaw and Krakau.

Radisson is a good hotel and is located in the center from where you can explore the the city on foot and is next to a nice shopping mall.
