I wish for anyone to post whatever information they have on the Eastern section of Poland, and ask questions.

Galacia keeps popping up in my family history, and I'm trying to figure out where it is/was.

South-East Poland - West Ukraine

In genealogy you will find that most people from this area have Jewish roots.

No this is where the army reserve where given homes after 1920. Look at all the Catholic church's. We all lived side by side in peace, Jewish, Catholic's and Ukrainians. This was my families home and birth place.

Galicia was the area during the partitions that belonged to Austria. In terms of the Polish quality of life, it was by far the most favorable place to live as the citizens weren't having Austrian culture forced upon them the way Prussian and Russian culture was in those sections of partition Poland. As Austria was the weakest of the three partitioning powers, Galicia was rather poor but also rather independent. Ukranian nationalism and to an extent Polish nationalism has many roots there.

My mum's family lived in Lwów, which I think was the capital of Galicia.

I can't believe how many times this area has changed hands. This is why I wanted Ukraine to join NATO as a way of keeping it.

Hi Juli,

as you probably niticed it is Galicja not Galacja, and Eagle is right Lwów was the capital of Galicja under Austrian Partition. In the time between WW (World War's) Lwów was one of the bigest cities in Poland, after Warszawa it was biggest Polish Cultural Center.

Eastern part of Poland between WW is called "KRESY"which biggest cities and cultural centers was Wilno, Brześć and Lwów. Unfortunately after pact Ribentrop-Molotov, Russian Red Army took over those lands in September 1939. After that those territories doesn't come back to Poland.

Katyn is quite far from Galicia and Ukraine. If you check on maps.google.com Katyn it is near to Smolensk, close to present Belarus.

Thank you, this is one of the ones I enjoy: lots of information. The picture you see is our memorial in warsaw, it's the cattle car used to deport and each train track is the differant areas. Feb. 10 it is lite with candles and so beautiful. I gave a link if you were sent to Siberia to add your family.

I am tracing my family records, since that wasn't obvious. I've been pouring over maps, and became overwhelmed a bit.

Galacia is what was written down on at Ellis Island on some family members, as point of origin, when they left for America, but not all. Just kept seeing the word. Some never left, many did, just clearing up the grey areas. I'm finishing the story for the four arms of my family as thoroughly as possible, for present and future generations in an actual artistic graph.

I appreciate all information, thank you very much Eagle, for not looking down on my lack of information. Knowledge makes us stronger.

Carol, thank you too!! What you have done means much to many, and most appreciated that you are making sure that the Poles who were exterminated are not forgotten. Thank you for your efforts.
