I sat with my cup of coffee and thoughtfully analysed this post. I wondered why a policeman would ask such an open question on PF. So, I looked at the profile. Ah ha, an exporter as well. Maybe they allow moonlighting in the Police Force in the US.

Im a full time Law Enforcement Officer with the Lewiston PD (Just North of Niagara Falls, NY)..Im a few years away from retirement and am operating an exporting business to subsidize my impending retirement.

And I agree, nice detective work. I actually joined here for business contacts, but after reading the many posts, Ive become quite interested...

Actually, Id say half of the Officers I know work a second job or own a side business. I work midnights / 12 hour shifts and have a lot of time off from the PD..allows me time to pursue a second career...

I'm not a law enforcement officer but i do have an interest and would like to ask you a question, there is a big debate going on in the UK about arming our police (Guns), i just wanted to know from the horses mouth so to speak if you think this would be a good move as obviously you are armed in America.

What have been the pro's and con's etc etc. Hope i'm not pestering you but i'm just interested on an officers point of view. Keep up the good work, it takes balls to be a Cop in the modern world, if you don't mind me saying especially in the US.

I couldnt imagine working without a firearm..On my normal shift, my departmant arms me with a pistol (Glock 40 cal) and in my patrol car there is a shotgun and a Colt AR15 rifle. Each has a specific job..sort of like a carpenter bringing differant tools for differant jobs. Id give anyone a lot of credit to put on a Police uniform and walk around unarmed.

How do they confront an armed suspect. To me its a big officer safety issue...Id love to read a bit about the pro's and con's...got a link ?

Your information is very interesting, i knew that an officer had a holstered pistol but did not realise that in every patrol car there was a shotgun (Close Combat) and a Rifle (Distance shooting). This means that there is three firearms available to your officers at one time. WOW thats a lot of fire power to us in the UK.

There is a procedure in the UK for facing armed suspects, an officer who is suspicious or has confirmed that a suspect is in possession of a firearm will contact the switch board and request armed back up (SO19) these are a specialised firearms unit, i suppose on a level with your S.W.A.T teams, that will be dispatched to the scene right away. To me this seems strange as the police are giving up control of the situation to the suspect until the armed response can get to the scene. Myself i believe our police should be armed, over here there is a big debate, on one side there are those who say that if we arm our police, the criminals will automatically arm themselves. On the other side there are those in favour who say. criminals will arm themselves anyway and we need to react to the criminal world.

I'm only 21 so don't have much experience or real knowledge of the police force or history so i haven't any links sorry.

They are un-armed yes, its really strange i guess but 'bobby's on the beat' those who walk the streets have never been armed!!!! i would ask the same thing in your position, its unbelievable isn't it??

And people treat them seriosly ? They wouldn't here.

They have batons and stuff...

The general population yes, obviously the law breakers don't but by what your saying it sounds like the respect is gained by simply holstering a gun to your side. While this is not the right way to gain respect it does act as a deterrent to criminals to know that the police are armed.

i guess they dont get much respect in some areas --but if people don't take them seriously and bait them -they get a nice night in the cells. police are trained to overcome the criminals physically, so do not need guns i guess. but no, they are not very respected (at least where i'm from). I've seen many times police arresting people and being verbally abused like crazy --but the police just handcuff them and take them away.

they are given a stick to hit people with G but as far as i am aware, regulations stipulate that they are only allowed to hit them on the shoulder

Nah, they just give them a good wallop anywhere they feel like :-)

and if some ARE looking they can always get a shot if they have a problem with it...

Yes, because this is the UK and I'm proud of our Police Force. The UK gets a lot of knocks for various issues but it's still one of the best places to live !!

Some Police are armed, even on patrol but it is not the norm .........

Airports, railway stations etc etc and others..........we just don't see it like in the USA where it's very apparent.

Polanda is good too.......

But I do have to stick up for the UK as well........
