Not me.

But the LDS have helped me immensely with my Genealogy. So, I'm grateful to them.

I went to a conference (genealogical) in Salt Lake City last year and found out that the Mormans will only film records in places where they are invited to do so, and they teach the people off the area to do the filming, etc. I think that all of the records that they have preserved, and shared with everyone, is truly remarkable!

Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith (ISBN 1-4000-3280-6) is a book of investigative non-fiction written by Jon Krakauer first published in July 2003. It is a juxtaposition of two stories: the formation and evolution of the LDS or Mormon church, and a modern-day double murder committed by fundamentalist Mormons, Ron and Dan Lafferty, in the name of God. The book examines the ideologies of both The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and more controversial polygamy-practicing groups, such as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The Fundamentalists aren't Mormon's. It's a splinter group. It's like saying Lutherans are the same as Catholics.

And I like Pigwidgeon, would love to get to know a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Poland.

they aren't the same, they are splinter groups. Their founders were excommunicated from the mainstream LDS church.

the term "LDS" is used for the mainstream church members. We're commonly referred to as Mormons

RLDS is used for the Reorganized church of jesus christ of latterday saints, although I do believe they dropped "of latter day saints" recently.

Fundamental Mormon is what I've heard fundamentalist called.

the only common thing is that they all claim Joseph Smith and their founder.

hope that helps

are you polish?

right on the technicalities.. but RDLS isn't really that much different then LDS. main differnece is the multiple marragies. that mainly why those folks get excommunicated in the first place.

I'm 50% Polish. I stated that in my intro.

Why do you ask?

and there's lots of differences with the RLDS faith to mainstream.

Maybe comparing apples to oranges is a good analogy. Both are fruit, come from tree's, but they are different.

I"ve been reading that link from pbs that you posted. I missed it when it was aired on tv, but I have heard much on it. Still have more to read.

May I ask, are you just someone who found Mormon history interesting, or do you want more to convince someone that it's a bad religion to follow, but handy with geneology?

If you're just a historian at heart, I'd be happy to discuss more with you.

ok

...

glad you're enjoying the links.. you ought to watch the episodes too.

yes, history in general interests me. not really that interested in bashing just any one anything. tend to be an equal opportunity offender. :)

"equal opporunity offender" that's quite funny.

History can be pretty intriging.

And yes, my Polish mother was LDS (mainstream) Mormon. She and my dad were converts. A generation back they are Catholics on both sides, and somewhere on the Polish side, Jewish as well.

so, I'd also love to know more about Polish-Jews too.

The Mormons are a very powerful world-wide corporate/religious entity...their rituals &
history show strong ties to Freemasonry...their obsession with genealogy stems from
their belief that all their members are descended from one of the 12 tribes of Israelites...
if they cannot find enogh 'genealogical' material from your family history, they will assign
you a 'tribal' designation based on nothing, really.

Yes, there is some masonry history, particulary with building.

As for geneology, no it's not believing that everyone is descended from the 12 tribes of Israel. It's because we literally believe that family ties are meant to be binding and are eternal in nature.

And you aren't "assigned" a tribe. If you recieve what is known as a patrichal blessing you can discover which tribe you are from, or which one you are "adopted" into in pertaining to blessings that was given each of the original tribe's "Fathers." (I'm not sure of a better way to phrase that.) So it may seem that you are assigned a tribe based on nothing. It's inspirational.
We do believe in the literal gathering of the 12 tribes.

Keep in mind, that we also believe that God still talks to ous. He still reveals things. So it's God revealing what tribe, not man assigning you a tribe.

And in many cases, geneology has backed up "tribal dsignation" as you call it.
